Benedict Cumberbatch modeled an unexpected accessory while attending the 2025 Cannes Film Festival — an arm sling.
The Doctor Strange actor, 48, traveled to Cannes, France to promote his new movie, The Phoenician Scheme, which stars the actor alongside the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston.
On the red carpet at the movie’s premiere on Sunday, May 18, Cumberbatch wore a sleek black tuxedo with a matching bow tie and tinted sunglasses. He finished off the outfit with a black sling that went over his shoulder and held one of his arms close to his body.

While attending a photocall for the movie the following day, Cumberbatch opted for a more casual look, pairing a tan short-sleeved shirt with dark pants and white sneakers. For the occasion, his green and brown sling matched the more relaxed vibes and was adorned with polka dots.
It is not clear why Cumberbatch had to wear the sling or how he injured himself.

Directed by Wes Anderson, The Phoenician Scheme is set in the 1950s.
“While escaping yet another assassination attempt, [Zsa-Zsa] Korda (Benicio del Toro) reconnects with his daughter, whom he hasn’t seen in six years, with the aim of grooming her to succeed him,” the synopsis on the Cannes Film Festival website reads. “The two embark on a series of outlandish adventures to fulfill Zsa-Zsa’s grand plan: the large-scale exploitation of a region with huge potential.”
Cumberbatch was joined at the film’s premiere by his longtime wife, Sophie Hunter. She stood out at the event in a scarlet dress with off-the-shoulder sleeves. The couple exchanged vows in 2015 and have welcomed three children together — sons Christopher, 9, Hal, 8, and Finn, 6.

While his accessory made a statement on the red carpet, there have been many larger discussions about the fashionable looks on display this year.
Shortly before the festival commenced, organizers revealed that they had banned nude dresses and gowns with excessively long trains.
On the official FAQ website for the event, organizers declared that “nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival,” citing “decency reasons.” Trains “that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater” were also forbidden this year.

Eveningwear is officially the “required” style that attendees have to wear while attending late-night events.
In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, reps said that the new rules weren’t “to regulate attire per se but to prohibit full nudity on the carpet.”
Halle Berry, who is acting on the festival’s jury this year, revealed that she had to change one of her looks to reflect the updated rules. However, she did wear a longer train on the red carpet as the festival continued.
The Phoenician Scheme premieres in theaters on May 30.
