Beyond High School: Sydney Sweeney Previews an ‘Unhinged’ and Emotional Euphoria Season 3

Sydney Sweeney reveals that the highly anticipated third season of HBO’s Euphoria will be ‘unhinged’ and mark a significant departure from previous seasons, as she grapples with the emotional return to her complex character Cassie Howard and the absence of co-star Angus Cloud.

As fans eagerly await the return of HBO’s critically acclaimed drama Euphoria, star Sydney Sweeney has offered tantalizing glimpses into what promises to be a radically different and emotionally charged third season. Known for her powerful portrayal of Cassie Howard, Sweeney confirms that the upcoming season, set to premiere in spring 2026, will be nothing short of “unhinged.”

The series, which launched much of its young cast to stardom, including Sweeney who was just 21 when it debuted, has resonated deeply with audiences for its raw depiction of adolescence. Now, with a significant time jump that picks up after the core characters have graduated high school, Euphoria Season 3 is poised to explore new territory.

Cassie Howard: Embracing the Chaos in an ‘Unhinged’ New Season

Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie Howard, has become a cornerstone of Euphoria’s dramatic narrative. From her infamous “Oklahoma” bathroom breakdown to her complicated romantic entanglements, Cassie is known for making choices driven by intense, albeit often misguided, love. Sweeney describes her deep connection to the character.

“I have such a spot in my heart for Cassie, and I hold her really close and dear,” Sweeney shared in an interview with Empire Magazine. “She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. She’s flawed on so many levels, but she does it all from a place of love.”

The actress further teased the escalating intensity of the new season, noting her collaborative process with creator Sam Levinson. “I’ll read something, then I’ll call him, and I’m like, ‘let’s go crazier.’ And he’s like, ‘I’m all in.’ And this season is unhinged,” Sweeney revealed to Empire Magazine, adding with a laugh that it’s “even more unhinged” than before. This suggests a continuation, and perhaps an amplification, of Cassie’s tumultuous journey.

For fans, the inability to separate actors from their characters can be challenging, especially for someone as complex as Cassie. Sweeney acknowledges this, stating, “If they’re hating me for decisions that my character is making, then I’m playing the character correctly.” This perspective highlights her dedication to embodying Cassie’s intricate personality, even when it draws strong reactions from viewers.

A New Chapter: The Time Jump and Evolving Narratives

The impending third season is set to introduce a substantial time jump, propelling the story beyond high school graduation. This shift promises a fresh dynamic, allowing the characters to navigate early adulthood and face new challenges. Sweeney has hinted that this change will be profound, assuring fans that the evolution will be worth the wait.

“People will be really amazed with what season 3 becomes,” the actress shared, underscoring that it will be “so different” from the first two seasons. This departure aligns with the show’s reputation for innovation and its willingness to delve into the darker, more intricate aspects of its characters’ lives as they grow up.

The creative vision for the new season is already drawing praise from inside the production. Co-star Jacob Elordi, who plays Nate Jacobs, lauded Sam Levinson’s approach, stating that the creator has “constructed something that’s incredibly clever and cinematic” and that it was “incredibly liberating” to play something “so sort of far out from what I’ve done before.”

The Emotional Weight: Filming Without Angus Cloud

One of the most significant challenges and emotional impacts on the cast and crew for Season 3 is the absence of their beloved co-star, Angus Cloud, who tragically passed away at 25 due to an accidental overdose. His portrayal of Fezco was a fan favorite, and his loss has left a void.

Sydney Sweeney openly discussed the profound grief experienced by the cast. “We were constantly talking by phone crying, because it was a huge shock,” she shared, recalling the moment she received the news of Cloud’s death. The reality of his absence is expected to hit hardest once filming is underway.

“I don’t think I’ll feel it’s real until it hits me when we’re shooting and I don’t see Angus on set,” Sweeney reflected. She views the return to work as a form of collective therapy, a way for the cast to support one another through their shared loss. “When we are shooting, all of our eyes are on each other and we are there for each other, just in a different way than we can when we are all separated by different places in the world,” she explained, acknowledging that in the entertainment industry, deceased individuals “still live in many ways” through their work.

For Sweeney, playing Cassie is also a form of healing. “Cassie is definitely the closest person to me (especially in the first season) that I have played and means a lot to me,” she said. “But it’s almost like therapy: I can let out so many things… that when I come home I feel free.”

Sydney Sweeney’s Star Continues to Rise

Beyond the emotional rollercoaster of Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney’s career has soared since the show’s debut. She has become one of Hollywood’s most bankable actresses, balancing highly anticipated projects with strategic career moves.

Her recent ventures include the rom-com Anyone But You and the horror flick Immaculate, which she also executive produced. Looking ahead, Sweeney is set to star in the boxing biopic Christy, portraying real-life champion Christy Martin, and is executive producing and starring in a Barbarella remake for Sony. She recently expressed her desire to pick Jane Fonda’s brain, who starred in the original 1968 sci-fi film, for insights into the role.

Sweeney’s decision to join projects like Madame Web was a calculated move. She emphasized it as a “strategic business decision” to build relationships with major studios. “Without doing ‘Madame Web’ I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there,” she explained, noting how it opened doors for projects like Anyone But You and Barbarella.

As Sydney Sweeney wraps up filming for Euphoria Season 3 in late October 2025, she described it as a “bittersweet” and “emotional” moment. “It’s been such a journey. It’s been my entire twenties,” Sweeney told Variety, highlighting the profound personal and professional growth tied to the series. She was 20 when she filmed the pilot and is now 28, underscoring the significant chapter Euphoria represents in her life.

With returning cast members and new faces including Trisha Paytas, Natasha Lyonne, Danielle Deadwyler, and Eli Roth, Euphoria Season 3 is poised to deliver a transformative and unforgettable experience when it finally arrives in spring 2026.
