Angela Bassett Just Made Her Met Gala Debut

Though the Met Gala may have become known for the A-list celebrities who strut the red carpet in their most over-the-top outfits, the annual Costume Institute exhibition opening has had some notable blank spots among its attendees over the years. Not least among those, Angela Bassett, the two-time Oscar nominee, honorary Academy Award recipient, Emmy, and Golden Globe winner, Town & Country cover star, and all around style icon has never before made her way up the gala’s steps. Until tonight, that is.

As one would expect, Bassett looked positively stunning, fulfilling that night’s “Tailored for You” dress code in a blue and black suit set, by Burberry. The matching pants and low-scoop vest were worked in a classic vine jacquard and topped with a tuxedo cape with traditional lapels. To complete the masculine notes, she added a transparent black dress shirt and a black gauze tie. She accented the look with a Jon Narcisso Millinery hat, Messika High jewelry, and an Omega timepiece.

Despite an enviable career that spans both big and small screens (she currently plays the lead in the hit drama 9-1-1 and is set to reprise her role as CIA director Erika Sloane opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning, later this month) Bassett confessed to T&C in our February cover story that she suffered from imposter syndrome early in her career. “They didn’t have that term for it then,” she explained. “But I felt a little of that. I still do feel that. But you put on a face, and you go, and you do it anyway. Courage is doing it even when you’re scared to do it, right?”
