Soon, we’ll be able to step back inside Barneys New York.
A new drama about the famed high-end department store, which closed its last brick-and-mortar location in 2020, is slated to make its way to Prime Video. Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the duo responsible for bringing early aughts television staples Gossip Girl and The O.C. to life, to serve as co-showrunners, Deadline reported today. Ahead, we break down everything to know about the project so far.
The show will take us behind-the-scenes of Barneys’ reopening.
As Deadline notes, “The untitled series is set when Barneys reopens its doors in Manhattan, and the fashion elite and behind-the-scenes staff collide in a whirlwind of ambition, secrets, and style.”
The luxury department store has been a staple for New York City fashion lovers since it first opened its doors in 1923. The retailer is fondly remembered for introducing major brands and fresh designers to American shoppers, including Armani, Proenza Schouler, Comme des Garçons, and Rick Owens.
“[Barneys was] a place where you could discover things. That’s why you would come to Barneys,” Julie Gilhart, who formerly led the company’s buying team, told Harper’s Bazaar last year. “You could go to Saks or Bergdorf’s, but you came to Barneys because in front of Prada, you might discover a designer like Colleen Allen.”
Although its physical locations were shuttered in 2020, Barneys has lived on through pop-ups and a partnership with Saks Fifth Avenue.
The showrunners previously worked on Gossip Girl and The O.C.
Fake Empire cofounders Schwartz and Savage are best known for developing beloved teen TV shows like The CW’s Gossip Girl, which ran from 2007 to 2012, and Fox’s The O.C., which ran from 2003 to 2007. More recently, the duo has teamed up to work on Hulu’s Looking for Alaska, the Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries, and Marvel’s Runaways.
The Barneys drama is Schwartz and Savage’s first known project tocome out of a two-year deal with Amazon MGM Studios, according to Deadline.
