Bob Dylan has always been careful about maintaining the image that he wants you to see.

The 83-year-old American legend has gone through many cultural and aesthetic reinventions, always carefully curating the public image he presents, whether that be a folk-hero vagabond, a mysterious rebel, a recluse, or a preacher. His few crowd interactions over the years have been notable, including his infamous Free Trade Hall Concert, where a crowd member called him “Judas,” to which he famously responded, “I don’t believe you.”

Needless to say, Dylan maintains a consistent character on stage, and in the public eye, which is why it’s such a big deal when he deviates from it.

At a recent show in California as a part of his Outlaw Festival tour with Willie Nelson, Dylan broke character, laughing at some of the antics of the crowd. Take a look.

I guess that’s the secret to make Dylan laugh. Shirtless dudes dancing. Fans left their thoughts in the comments about this unexpected moment.

“Dylan laughing at those kids having fun… lol. FANTASTIC VERSION.”

“Valid reaction to Bob Dylan.”

“Love this.”

If there’s one consistent thing we’ve learned about Bob Dylan over the years, it’s that he’s never going to do exactly what you expect.
