Jurassic World Rebirth is the culmination of decades of genetic modification. It exposes a pivotal moment where the effects unleashed by Jurassic Park scientists can no longer be hidden. When paleontologists head to a forgotten island, they face prehistoric nightmares in the form of failed dinosaur experiments. One of these mutations transcends all biological evolution in its existence: Distortus Rex. If you thought the T. rex was scary, this new Mutadon will have you shaking in your theater seat.
The Origin of Distortus Rex
The Distortus Rex is a hybrid Tyrannosaurus whose exact DNA has not been revealed yet. We know that it’s much bigger than T Rex, which is already hyping up the fandom. The trailer hints at multiple encounters with this monstrosity of a dinosaur. One of these scenes highlights how small and vulnerable humans are compared to Distortus Rex. Whether Distortus Rex will take on other dinosaurs is still unclear, but they’d be hard-pressed to win this fight.
The mutant dinosaur has a head that never formed past its embryonic stage, six long, disproportionate limbs, and jaws that could crack steel. Its large head and beady eyes resemble something more alien than prehistoric. However, it does fit with the other mutant dinosaurs from Jurassic World Rebirth. Some compare it to a beluga whale with legs, while others point out the ape-like gait of the massive hybrid.
Is Distortus Rex a Villain or a Victim?
Distortus Rex is an anomaly in this new Jurassic World installation. It’s hard to know if it will be the villain of Jurassic World Rebirth. In previous movies, the dinosaurs typically end up becoming sympathetic characters. With no control over how they’re kept, bred, or used, humans are instead portrayed as the ultimate antagonists. However, the trailer shows us a seriously mean-looking dinosaur hybrid. If Distortus Rex is to be the enemy of the cast in Jurassic World Rebirth, they’re in for a fight. Theoretically, it could crush someone with any of its six legs. If that fails, it would still have enough speed to make a meal of any human.

The build of this mutant was revealed even further when a Mattel Distortus Rex toy began appearing on shelves. This gives us an even better idea of just how much of an abomination this mutated dinosaur will be. Some fans speculate that this design may differ from the final version, while others are shocked by its outlandish appearance. It’s undoubtedly the scariest hybrid we’ve seen. Its claws alone would be long enough to tear through walls, and it also has a row of sharp fangs.
A Painful Deformity
In an interview with Empire, David Vickery, Creative Director for Industrial Light & Magic, says, “It’s as if another animal has been wrapped around the T-Rex.” The trailer shows its deformities in some detail: pitiful eyes, uneven limbs, and, most notably, its premature skull formation. All of these features drive home the notion that these experiments failed and caused pain to the dinosaurs. Distortus Rex might be highly predatory, but it also stands outside the bounds of the natural world. We’ve seen this theme throughout the franchise, specifically in Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Jurassic World Dominion.
The Biggest, Baddest, and Meanest of Jurassic Park
In the Jurassic World Rebirth trailer, we learn that Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) are part of a specialized team returning to the remote island. Their goal is to collect DNA that may save thousands of lives. Unfortunately, they must face the dinosaurs that were “too dangerous” to bring off the island. We see both Zora and Henry up against Winged Mutadons, a species of Spinosaurus, and other unidentified mutations. Each of these hybrids looks more dangerous than the last.

This doesn’t bode well for a battle against Distortus Rex, which likely plays a huge role in the plot. It’s observed in some kind of containment, and fans naturally wonder how it was created. Jurassic World Rebirth is being dubbed a new era for Jurassic Park. This means the mutated beast could become a recurring character. The bigger question is: Will the entire cast survive to fight another day, either with or against this behemoth mutation? Time will tell.
