Finneas’ latest project is out of this world.
On Wednesday, May 14, the 10-time Grammy winner released the music video for his song “2001” which stars Kate Hudson. The music video stars Finneas, 27, as an actor portraying an astronaut. Hudson, 46, meanwhile, appears as the director of the film that Finneas’ character has a crush on.
Throughout the music video, the actor tries to impress the director with his acting range and by bringing her coffee. Unfortunately, his love remains unrequited.
“2001, life or death, you did it for fun / But you flew too close to the sun / And look what you’ve done,” he sings in the pop tune’s chorus.
Along with the lyrics, the visuals call back to outer space, with a solar system model that Finneas wanders through, held by Hudson and the cockpit of a rocketship.
Director Claudia Sulewski gave insight into working on the intergalactic music video and the classic sci-fi film that inspired it.
“When I first started conceptualizing this music video, I knew I wanted to pay homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey with nods to some of the film’s most iconic set-ups,” she said in a press release, “like the fisheye lens and the upside-down sequence, along with a few little easter eggs from the behind-the-scenes of the film.”
One easter egg is when Finneas shakes his head while traveling through space. Another is the diorama reveal at the end.
“To play off Finneas’s lyrics, I wanted to mix in some light, cheeky moments between Finneas and Kate,” Sulewski added. “An actor hopelessly in love with his director, who couldn’t care less and is only focused on making a great film.”
One moment in the music video appeared to call back to a scene in Interstellar when Matthew McConaughey’s character Cooper cried on his spaceship, hearing from his daughter Murph, portrayed by Jessica Chastain.

Up next for the singer-songwriter is a string of music festivals throughout Europe and North America, kicking off with BST Hyde Park in London on July 4. He will also perform at Lollapalooza and Outside Lands in the U.S.
