Sometimes even the members of the Lonely Island comedy trio are amazed at what they manage to get away with.
On the latest episode of their Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast (which was notably missing the presence of Meyers this time), Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone held a chaotic and hilariously rambling discussion about their 2009 digital short “A Couple of Homies.”
The short aired during Saturday Night Live season 34, episode 13, with Rosario Dawson hosting alongside musical guest Fleet Foxes. And while the short features the trio’s comedy staples — random costume changes, infectiously terrible song lyrics, etc. — the star of the show is the surprise appearance of Will Forte’s unblurred butt.
“I remember us being like, ‘How is this possible that we’re airing this?’ And then we rewatched it this morning and it is fully in there,” Samberg recalled. “And it is obviously the funniest part and the biggest laugh in it, but it was like a full NYPD Blue, you know, where you’re like, ‘There’s a flesh butt being shown on network television.'”
While Taccone was taken aback by Samberg’s reference to the ABC police procedural that ran from 1993 to 2005, Schaffer quickly picked up what his colleague was putting down.
“I forgot that they did that, but that was a big deal, Dennis Franz’s butt. And that show was on from 10 to 11 p.m. on prime time,” he noted.
Samberg joked that “A Couple of Homies” might actually be an “homage” to NYPD Blue and “the whole culture surrounding it.”
In the butt-baring short, Samberg and SNL star Fred Armisen are two guys just hanging out when Forte begins singing lyrics that describe what they’re doing. They high-five (“Hands meet in the symphony of friendship”); drink sodas (“Soda, they’re so delicious and bubbly, they come in cans”); read a magazine (“Having fun with a magazine, just getting information from the written page”); and put on yellow dresses, peel bananas, and stare at each other (“Peeling bananas, wearing dresses, looking at each other’s awesome faces, just two buddies being friends and buddies”).

In the final moments of the video, the camera pulls back as Forte steps away from the microphone and turns, revealing a familiar Lonely Island ploy: He’s not wearing pants or underwear.
“However, in this particular instance it’s not blurred, and he leans against the wall and we see his full butt,” Samberg recalled.

When the question of whether Forte was wearing a codpiece came up, Samberg posed that “there’s a strong chance it was like just you or Kiv were in there with him and he did it.” Schaffer mused that the MacGruber star most likely “grabbed a dance belt of some sort.”
“You know what, knowing Forte, he might have [already] owned one,” Taccone quipped.
