Think libraries are just for bookworms? Think again!

Public libraries are treasure troves for keeping your mind sharp and your brain healthy. Here are five ideas for using your library to stretch your mind.

  1. Check out some fiction
We all have types of books we like the most. But your brain is at its best when reading something new–especially when that new book is fiction. In a review of 70+ studies, researchers found that reading fiction was linked to a positive effect on the brain. Fiction readers were especially better at empathizing with others. Another analysis of over 30,000 people showed a link between reading fiction and stronger verbal skills, reasoning, abstract thinking, and problem-solving. So, if you don’t usually read fiction, ask your librarian for suggestions. You’ll be amazed by what’s out there!

  2. Take advantage of computer resources
Not tech-savvy? Your local library might be able to help. Most public libraries have computers with internet access their patrons can use. Many also offer free courses in computer skills, internet safety, and online research. This can be good for the brain, too. People who regularly use technology can learn new skills, build social connections, and find out about health resources available to them.

  3. Eat for brain health
We’ve all heard that “you are what you eat.” Did you know your local library is a fantastic resource for books about healthy cooking and eating? For a brain-healthy choice, look for cookbooks that focus on Mediterranean foods or the MIND diet. One option is “The 30-Minute Mediterranean Diet Cookbook: 101 Easy, Flavorful Recipes for Lifelong Health” by Serena Ball and Deanna Segrave-Daly – but there are many more!

  4. Get social
It’s always a good time to make a new friend! Did you know your local library offers book clubs, lecture series, workshops, and other community events? These are great opportunities to get to know others in your community, exchange ideas, and join lively discussions. Studies show that a healthy social life promotes brain health. Ask your librarian for a calendar of events today!

  5. Give your brain a workout
People care about their brain health. That’s why many public libraries offer BrainHQ at no cost to their patrons. BrainHQ is an online set of brain exercises that are proven to help people think faster, focus better, and remember more. Library patrons using BrainHQ can also attend free brain-health webinars. Really serious about your brain health? BrainHQ users can also join online classes on building a stronger brain. They’re great opportunities to meet “like-minded” folks! If your library doesn’t offer BrainHQ, ask them to contact support@brainhq.com today. Your brain will thank you!
