Sergey Brin has a lot of money, but he isn’t reckless with it. The Google co-founder has a few refreshingly frugal habits that are actually relatable.
This might be surprising, considering he’s the eighth richest man in the world, according to Forbes. His net worth is currently nearly $126 billion, which doesn’t necessarily put him in an earnings bracket known for penny-pinching.
Of course, his lifestyle does include plenty of lavish amenities, including a $35 million Malibu, California bachelor pad, according to Page Six. He also owns a private jet and a collection of yachts and aquatic toys known as the “Fly Fleet,” according to Entrepreneur.com.
While he clearly has a fondness for the finer things, Brin hasn’t lost sight of the value of a dollar. Below is a look at five frugal habits he revealed in an interview with Moment Magazine.

Being Happy Without Many Things
Some billionaires can’t get enough stuff — but that isn’t Brin’s style. He credited his parents for molding him into the kind of person who doesn’t need to surround himself with material possessions to feel validated.
Trying Not To Waste Food
When grocery budgets are tight, it’s not uncommon for people to consciously work to keep food waste to a minimum. However, Brin also shares this mindset. He said he finds himself always wiping his plate clean.
Looking at Prices
Given his net worth, Brin doesn’t need to look at most price tags — but he does anyway. This shows he doesn’t just spend money aimlessly, although he could.
Shopping at Costco
Not only is Brin a Costco shopper, he also bought his parents a membership and taught them to shop at the warehouse store. This shows his continued desire to stretch his dollar, despite being a billionaire.
Cooking His Own Food
Right before going to college, Brin took it upon himself to learn to cook. This is a skill he still uses, as he owns a pasta machine and even has a special recipe called “Chernobyl Chili.”
It’s unknown whether Brin has a personal chef, but even if he does, he’s likely still using his cooking skills to prepare food for himself at least sometimes — which is a money saver.
