The Broadway League has announced the cancellation of all evening performances on Sunday, Feb. 22, due to the impending blizzard heading towards New York City. This decision affects various productions, including new shows like Chess and Stranger Things: The First Shadow, as well as long-running hits like Wicked and The Lion King.

Sometimes the show doesn’t go on. For the sake of public safety, Broadway will dim its lights earlier than usual on Sunday, Feb. 22 due to the impending blizzard heading towards New York City. In a statement shared on social media, the Broadway League announced that while all matinees will continue as scheduled, evening performances have been canceled.

“Due to anticipated travel impacts from the impending blizzard and evening travel bans already announced for our surrounding areas, Broadway theatre owners and producers have come to the consensus that evening performances (curtain times at 6pm or later) tonight will be cancelled,” the statement read. It further stated that for questions about exchange or refund policies, theatre-goers should contact their point of purchase directly.

These cancellations include new productions such as Chess, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Bug, and Every Brilliant Thing starring Daniel Radcliffe, in addition to mainstays like Wicked, The Lion King, and Aladdin. Initially, there was one exception to the cancellations: the Tony-winning production of Operation Mincemeat, the much-raved-about West End transfer.

Sunday was set to mark the final performance from Mincemeat‘s original cast members, David Cumming, Claire-Marie Hall, Natasha Hodgson, Jak Malone, and Zoë Roberts. But in an update shared at 1 p.m., the League confirmed that the evening performance has indeed been canceled. In its place, after the cast performs its now-final show — the 2 p.m. matinee — they will perform a concert of songs from the show, which will be live-streamed on Mincemeat‘s official Instagram page starting at 5:30 p.m.

Elsewhere, the Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Bug announced a “$45 snow sale” for all remaining seats at the show’s 2 p.m. matinee.

The National Weather Service has issued blizzard and winter storm warnings for New York City and surrounding areas, with the worst of the snowfall due to arrive on Sunday evening and into Monday. A whopping 12 to 18 inches of snow is expected across most of the region throughout the night and early hours of Monday morning.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani has already declared a local state of emergency, as the city braces for its first dangerous blizzard in over a decade, and all non-essential vehicles have been ordered off the streets from 9 p.m. Sunday to 12 p.m. Monday local time.
