Princess Eugenie learned many impactful lessons from her late grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, including how to dress in style.

“[The] most valuable lesson [I learned from her] would probably be how you show up for people, how you show up for your work [and] for your charities, for the people that really need to see you,” Eugenie, 35, said on the Saturday, May 3, episode of the “Lessons From Our Mothers” podcast. “She always wore color. I remember seeing pictures of her wearing every color of the rainbow, and that’s because she really believed that you needed to see her.”

She continued, “She was a symbol for so many of hope and of such dedication and duty. One of the biggest lessons was the fact that if you say you’re going to do something, you show up and are there and are happy [and] you’re willing to give as much as people [in attendance] are giving for you, as well. … She led by such [an] example of duty and what that means to really dedicate yourself to others.”

Eugenie is the youngest daughter of Elizabeth’s son Prince Andrew, who also shares Princess Beatrice with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson. The family all came together to mourn the late queen after she died in September 2022. (Elizabeth is succeeded as monarch by her firstborn son, King Charles III.)

“I think about her so much more now than when she was here, as of, like, ‘What would Granny do?’” Eugenie said. “Beatrice and I talk about it all the time, like, the memories and it brings tears to your eyes thinking about all the joy that she created for so many people.”

She added, “I think when Granny was alive, I shared her with the world. She was a part of everybody. And then, when she died, I felt the closest I ever felt to her and the fact that she was my granny.”

According to the princess, “Gone are the days of people and women like [her] grandmother.”

“She really did show up all the time,” Eugenie remembered. “Now, it’s so easy for people to cancel [or] say no. To uphold those values that she stood by, I’m honored that piece of her lives [on] through me being able to [follow in her footsteps and write handwritten thank-you notes].”

Eugenie also noted how much she “really admired” Elizabeth’s frequent dedication to her duty.

“I do think her dedication and duty to this country, and making the country her family — and the Commonwealth,” Eugenie said. “I really admired every single detail of that about her. Also, the way she could disarm a room with her smile or her wit, her humor and her kindness.”
