As a Floridian travel writer, I always make it a point to visit Miami before the spring break crowds hit. The city has a lot to offer, from its natural beauty to its vibrant cultural scene, and I’m excited to share my favorite spots with you.
Miami is widely regarded as a top spring break party destination. However, as a Floridian, I always try to time my visits before the crowds arrive. In recent years, Miami has cracked down on spring break boundaries, enforcing strict restrictions and even launching a viral-style “breakup” campaign, attempting to shift the focus to fitness and health in an effort to cull the craziness.
Springtime in Miami
There’s perhaps no better time to visit Miami than the first half of the year, as the Sunshine State transitions from its mild winter to sultry summer and the area’s natural beauty shines. This part of the year sees warm, dry weather, no hurricane threats, and lots of outdoor activities to enjoy it all—go now for festivals, beach days, golf, al fresco dining, or cultural events like the Miami Open, the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, or even Ultra during Miami Music Week if you’re into electronic music.
Coconut Grove
If there’s any place more pleasant than Coconut Grove in the winter and spring, this Floridian would love to know. This charming, walkable waterfront pocket of Miami has classy-cool energy, a buzzy dining scene, a lively lineup of art and music festivals, and boutique hotels like Mayfair House Hotel & Garden, Mr. C Miami, and even a luxurious Ritz-Carlton.
Wynwood
Before beaches fill with spring breakers and Ocean Drive hits peak congestion, there’s a creative side of the city—just north of downtown, in Wynwood—hitting its sweet spot, ripe for exploring. And exploring is what Wynwood Walls is made for; this neighborhood of colorful murals and independent galleries is best strolled with a Panther Coffee latte (hot or iced at this time of year!) in hand and your iPhone camera at the ready.
Miami’s Sports Season
Sports and Miami go hand in hand—this city loves an excuse to let loose, cheer loudly, and get amped on something we can wholeheartedly get behind. Inter Miami’s first season in their new billion-dollar home base, Miami Freedom Park, kicks off April 4. Whether you’re into soccer or not, it’s a damn good time and an authentic window into the passionate spirit of Miami.
