Thunder’s Lu Dort and Pelicans’ Jeremiah Fears Ignite Late-Game Scuffle in Physical Showdown

A heated rivalry boiled over Tuesday night as Oklahoma City Thunder’s Lu Dort and New Orleans Pelicans rookie Jeremiah Fears engaged in a late-game shoving match, requiring massive intervention from teammates and coaches after Thunder’s 104-95 victory.

The final moments of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 104-95 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday, Jan. 27, were defined not by the game’s outcome, but by a raw, physical altercation between Thunder guard Lu Dort and Pelicans rookie Jeremiah Fears. The chippy play that had characterized their matchup throughout the game culminated in a shoving match that required the intervention of nearly 40 people to de-escalate.

The incident occurred in the final seconds of garbage time. With the Pelicans attempting a late basket, Fears secured an offensive rebound and attempted a scoop layup. He drew contact from Dort, who immediately shoved Fears. When Fears didn’t back down, Dort shoved him again with more force. The situation rapidly escalated as both players grabbed each other’s jerseys in balled fists, leading to a chaotic scrum on the court.

At its peak, players, assistant coaches, and officials swarmed the scene to separate the two combatants. Dort and Fears continued to jaw at each other even as they were being pulled apart. Fears eventually broke free and chased Dort down the court before being ushered toward the New Orleans tunnel by two staffers. Dort, meanwhile, walked toward the Thunder locker room.

This was not the only flare-up in the game’s final minutes. Earlier, with 1:18 remaining, Pelicans forward Saddiq Bey and Thunder forward Jaylin Williams had a minor shoving match during an inbounds play, signaling the rising tensions.

Coach Daigneault Criticizes Officials’ Handling of the Situation

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault was critical of the officiating crew’s inability to control the game’s physicality, suggesting the altercation between Dort and Fears was a direct result of missed calls earlier in the sequence.

“Good guys, good (officiating) crew, but I thought they lost control of the game in the final minutes,” Daigneault said. “I thought that altercation at the end started well before that. The second thing is: I think that’s a foul on Dort. And if it was, they should put a whistle on that play regardless of the score and the time, because, if they do that, everybody stops playing and you can legislate the situation as you normally would.”

Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander offered a more tempered take, describing the incident as “typical basketball scuffle.” “I wasn’t too sure what happened,” Gilgeous-Alexander told reporters. “I had heard them going back and forth after they made the last two free throws, but I wasn’t sure what happened. And then, I turned around and they were face-to-face.”

A History of Physicality: The Dort-Fears Matchup

The scuffle was the culmination of a night filled with physical play between Dort and Fears. Dort, known for his tenacious defense and ability to frustrate opponents with his physical style, has a history of pushing the boundaries of on-court contact. Fears, a rookie, matched the intensity, leading to several heated exchanges throughout the game.

Dort finished the night with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Fears contributed 7 points, 3 steals, and 2 rebounds. Their individual stats tell the story of a hard-fought, defensive battle that ultimately boiled over.

What’s Next for the Thunder and Pelicans?

While no immediate disciplinary action has been announced, the NBA is certain to review the incident. Fines or suspensions could be a possibility for Dort and Fears, depending on the league’s assessment of the video. The teams are not scheduled to meet again this season, but this incident adds a new layer of intrigue to any future matchups.

For the Thunder, the win solidifies their position in the competitive Western Conference. For the Pelicans, the loss is a setback, but the focus will now shift to how they respond to a game that ended in chaos rather than closure.
