In a game defined by its intense rivalry atmosphere, Indiana used a dominant second-half run and clutch plays from Lamar Wilkerson and Conor Enright to secure a stunning 72-67 victory over No. 12 Purdue, giving coach Darian DeVries his most significant win at Indiana.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The stage was set for a classic, and Indiana delivered a performance for the ages. In a contest dripping with rivalry tension, the Hoosiers (14-7, 5-5 Big Ten) used a 21-6 run to close the first half and then survived a late Purdue charge to secure a monumental 72-67 victory over No. 12 Purdue (17-4, 7-3) on Tuesday night.

The win, fueled by Lamar Wilkerson’s 19 points and a clutch performance from guard Conor Enright, marked the biggest victory of coach Darian DeVries’ first season in Bloomington. It came in his first matchup against Indiana’s biggest rival and on a night when the court was alive with the energy of a pregame ceremony honoring the college football national champions.

Indiana’s ability to control the glass was a key factor, as the Hoosiers outrebounded the Boilermakers 33-28. This negated Purdue’s perceived advantage in the post and set the tone for a physical, defensive-oriented battle that had all the elements of a true rivalry showdown.

Wilkerson and Enright Lead the Charge

Lamar Wilkerson was the engine for Indiana’s offense, consistently attacking the basket and finishing with a team-high 19 points. His energy was matched by Nick Dorn, who added 18 points of his own, providing the scoring punch necessary to keep Purdue at bay.

However, it was Conor Enright who delivered the game’s most critical plays. With the Hoosiers clinging to a three-point lead and under 30 seconds to play, Enright made two clutch free throws that essentially sealed the victory. His five points in the final 71 seconds of the game were the difference between a win and a heartbreaking loss in a rivalry game.

Indiana’s Second-Half Surge and Purdue’s Struggles

The turning point of the game occurred in the final minutes of the first half. Indiana, trailing 23-21, unleashed a 21-6 run that turned a deficit into a commanding 40-29 lead going into the break. The surge was fueled by a strong defensive effort and transition offense that left Purdue scrambling.

Despite the large halftime lead, Indiana knew the Boilermakers would not go quietly. Purdue, led by Trey Kaufman-Renn’s 23 points, mounted several charges in the second half. When Braden Smith’s layup cut the deficit to 65-63 with 1:28 remaining, the momentum seemed to be shifting.

That’s when Enright answered, hitting a crucial 3-pointer to push the lead back to five. After Kaufman-Renn’s layup made it 68-65, Enright’s two free throws with 28 seconds left provided the final cushion. For a Purdue team that has looked uncharacteristic of its usual self, this loss extends its losing streak to a season-worst three games.

A Statement Win for the Hoosiers

This victory is more than just a box score win for Indiana. It’s a statement. The Hoosiers have now beaten ranked Boilermakers teams in four of their last five matchups at home, firmly establishing themselves as a difficult place to play for their in-state rivals.

For coach Darian DeVries, who was previously at Purdue, this win is deeply personal. It’s the kind of signature victory that can galvanize a program and build momentum. The Hoosiers have now won two straight games and will look to carry this confidence into their upcoming road trip to Los Angeles, starting with a game against UCLA on Saturday.

For Purdue, the focus now shifts to ending this skid. The Boilermakers will travel to Maryland on Sunday in an attempt to get back on track and solidify their standing in the competitive Big Ten conference. Their inability to overcome Indiana’s defensive pressure and rebounding edge proved costly in this rivalry clash.
