Country music legend Reba McEntire experienced an intensely emotional moment during a recent episode of The Voice, as a powerful performance led her to openly mourn her late stepson, Brandon Blackstock, who tragically passed away from cancer earlier in 2025. This raw display of grief deeply touched viewers and fellow coaches, reaffirming McEntire’s genuine connection to her family and the profound impact of her loss.

During the highly anticipated Knockouts round of The Voice Season 28, which premiered on Monday, October 27, 2025, an unexpected and deeply personal moment unfolded on screen. Coach Reba McEntire, known for her candid honesty and demand for emotional performances, found herself overwhelmed with grief while giving feedback to one of her team members.

The poignant incident occurred after singer Aubrey Nicole delivered a moving rendition of Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It.” Nicole dedicated the heartbreaking ballad, which tells the story of supporting a loved one through a cancer journey, to her own father, a cancer survivor who is now in remission. The performance, aimed at inspiring strength and hope, instead brought McEntire’s recent loss to the forefront.

Reba’s Raw Emotion and a Shared Moment of Grief

As Aubrey Nicole’s performance concluded, the usually composed Reba McEntire struggled to find her words. She took a visible ten seconds to compose herself, her voice breaking as she spoke. “I do know this song,” McEntire began, acknowledging her friend Martina McBride. Her fellow coach, Snoop Dogg, quickly handed her tissues as tears welled up.

“I lost my oldest son, because he did not win with cancer,” McEntire bravely shared, referencing her stepson, Brandon Blackstock. “So that was a real reminder that life goes on, and we sing songs about it, so we can remember the ones that are around us that we love so much and that we lean on at times like this.” The raw honesty of her grief created an emotional echo on stage, with Nicole also shedding tears alongside her coach.

Remembering Brandon Blackstock: A Beloved Family Member

Brandon Blackstock, the son of McEntire’s ex-husband Narvel Blackstock, passed away in August 2025 at the age of 48. His family confirmed that he had bravely battled melanoma, a form of skin cancer, for over three years. McEntire’s connection to Brandon was profound and long-standing; she married his father in 1989 and they divorced in 2015. Throughout those years, McEntire played a significant role in Brandon’s upbringing.

Speaking to People in October 2025, Reba McEntire described her relationship with Brandon as “precious.” She recalled, “I absolutely loved that child. He came into my life, I guess he was 4 years old. Then when Narvel and I got married, he was 13, 14.” She considered him, along with Narvel’s other children, as her own. She also shared that Brandon was the ex-husband of singer Kelly Clarkson, with whom he shared two children, River Rose, 11, and Remy Alexander, 9.

A Legacy of Laughter and Lasting Memories

McEntire fondly remembered Brandon’s vibrant personality, telling People that he was “so funny” and “loved to pull pranks.” She recounted a memory of him hiding behind a pillar at the Starstruck office in Nashville to scare employees, emphasizing his “mischievousness and his love of life.”

Following his death, McEntire posted a heartfelt tribute on social media, stating: “Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God. His struggle is over and he is in eternal peace in God’s presence. There is no one else like him, and I’m thankful for the time we had together. His legacy and laughter will be carried on through his family.” This message underscored the deep love and respect she held for him, a sentiment echoed by his family in a statement to Entertainment Weekly, which confirmed his three-year struggle with cancer before his passing.

The emotional impact of Aubrey Nicole’s performance and McEntire’s subsequent reaction on The Voice highlighted the universal experience of grief and the healing power of shared emotion through music. As McEntire herself noted, “that’s what country music does, it just brings out all the emotions and the stories, and it’ll grab you.”

The Voice: More Than Just a Competition

This season of The Voice, featuring coaches Reba McEntire, Michael Bublé, Snoop Dogg, and Niall Horan, has introduced new elements like the “Mic Drop” tool, allowing coaches to send one team member for audience voting to appear in the Rose Parade. However, moments like Reba’s candid outpouring of emotion transcend the competitive format, reminding both contestants and viewers that beneath the spotlight and talent, there is shared humanity. McEntire’s vulnerability resonated deeply with fans, who continue to offer their support and appreciation for her openness.

The episode served as a powerful reminder of how personal stories and authentic emotional responses can create the most memorable and impactful television moments, long after the competition ends.
