During a poignant episode of The Voice, Reba McEntire opened up about the recent death of her beloved stepson, Brandon Blackstock, who lost his fight with cancer, highlighting the personal struggles faced even by public figures and underscoring the importance of remembering loved ones.

Country music icon Reba McEntire delivered a deeply personal and emotional moment on The Voice Season 28, moving viewers and fellow coaches as she shared the heartbreaking news of her stepson, Brandon Blackstock’s, passing. His death in August 2025, after a valiant battle with melanoma, resonated profoundly during the show’s Knockouts round, transforming a musical performance into a touching tribute to life, loss, and the enduring power of family love.

An Emotional Revelation on The Voice

The emotional catalyst occurred during the first episode of Season 28’s Knockouts when Team Reba artist Aubrey Nicole performed Martina McBride’s powerful song, “I’m Gonna Love You Through It.” The song, known for its message of supporting a loved one through serious illness, specifically cancer, struck a chord with Aubrey, who dedicated it to her father, a cancer survivor now in remission. Coach Snoop Dogg expressed how moved he was by the performance, despite not knowing the song’s story. That’s when Reba McEntire, visibly emotional, interjected.

“I do know this song. Martina’s — I’ll need it, thank you, Snoop,” McEntire said, tears welling up as Snoop Dogg offered her a tissue. She then revealed the depth of her connection to the song’s theme. “Martina’s a good friend of mine. I lost my oldest son because he did not win with cancer,” she shared, referring to her stepson, Brandon Blackstock, who passed away at age 48 in August 2025 after a battle with melanoma, a form of skin cancer, as reported by NBC Insider.

Her poignant words served as a powerful reminder: “That was a real reminder that life goes on, and we sing songs about it so we can remember the ones around us that we love so much, that we lean on at times like this. You did a great job.” McEntire ultimately awarded Aubrey the win for that knockout round, a decision steeped in personal resonance.

The Deep Bond Between Reba and Brandon Blackstock

The relationship between Reba McEntire and Brandon Blackstock was far more than that of a stepmother and stepson; Reba considered him her own son. She was married to Brandon’s father, Narvel Blackstock, from 1989 to 2015. Together, they share a son, Shelby Blackstock, who is Brandon’s half-brother.

“My relationship with my stepson Brandon Blackstock was precious. I absolutely love that child,” McEntire told People magazine in October 2025. She recounted how Brandon entered her life when he was just four years old, and by the time she married Narvel, he was 13 or 14. Along with Narvel’s other children, Shawna and Chassidy, Reba played an active role in raising them.

“They were my kids. I absolutely love all four of them. And they’re real tight, they’re very close,” McEntire affirmed, emphasizing the strong familial bonds. Her admiration for Brandon was evident as she spoke of his vibrant personality. “Brandon is sorely missed, truly missed. With his mischievousness and his love of life, he brought joy to everybody that met him and we’ll never forget him.”

Remembering Brandon’s Spirit: Mischief and Legacy

Reba fondly recalled Brandon’s playful nature, particularly his love for pranks. “He loved to scare people,” she remembered. She shared a lighthearted memory from their time at the Starstruck Entertainment office in Nashville: “We’d be at the office…and I’d be sitting at my desk, and I’d see [an employee] walk by going to the ladies’ room, and then here comes Brandon. He’d hide behind the pillar.” These stories paint a vivid picture of a man who brought laughter and light to those around him.

Beyond his personal life, Brandon Blackstock was a talent manager, notably the former husband of pop superstar Kelly Clarkson, who had revealed his illness prior to his passing. At the time of his death, he was building new ventures with his partner, Brittney Marie Jones, including the Headwaters Livestock Auction and the Valley View Rodeo in Bozeman, Montana, which stand as part of his enduring legacy.

Following his passing, Reba McEntire also shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram tribute: “Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God. His struggle is over, and he is in eternal peace in God’s presence. There is no one else like him, and I’m thankful for the time we had together. His legacy and laughter will be carried on through his family. Rest in peace, cowboy. Happy trails to you ’til we meet again.”

A Family United in Grief and Love

Reba McEntire’s emotional sharing on The Voice not only honored Brandon Blackstock’s memory but also provided a moment of shared humanity, demonstrating how public figures, like all of us, grapple with profound loss. Her willingness to open up about her grief connected deeply with viewers, who recognized the universal experience of loving and losing. Brandon’s life, filled with joy, family, and ambition, leaves a lasting imprint on those who knew and loved him.
