Manny Jacinto is offering sage wisdom on marriage.
The Freakier Friday actor, 37, spoke with Cosmopolitan for an interview published Tuesday, Aug. 12, in which he spoke at length about his relationship with his wife, actress Dianne Doan.
“A good piece of advice that was given to me was to go to couples therapy before you need it,” he said, when asked for a piece of advice he would give to people who are about to get married.
“It goes for therapy in general. You don’t want to be going to couples therapy when you’re in a really bad spot because sometimes it might be too late. It helps with communication and figuring each other out, having that extra person.”

Jacinto also noted that marriages require “work” when he was asked about a lesson he learned about marriage that he did not know before he and Doan, 34, tied the knot.
“You have this idea, especially in all these movies that we watch, that it’s gonna be a happy ending forever, but there’s a reason why it ends on the happy ending,” Jacinto said. “Because there’s other chapters that unfold. It takes work, time and communication, but it’s worth it. If it was easy, everybody would stay married. But it’s not easy.”

Jacinto, who portrays Lindsay Lohan’s onscreen fiancé in Freakier Friday, revealed that he had gotten engaged to Doan back in November 2019.
“The biggest thing that helped me was asking myself, ‘Am I responding to how I’m feeling or am I actually responding to what they’re saying?’ So it can be as simple as, ‘Am I hungry and is this why I’m acting like this? Or did I not get enough sleep?’ Am I actually responding to what they’re saying properly and giving it the full attention?” Jacinto told Cosmopolitan, when asked for the best advice he has ever received about love.

“Because I noticed that if I don’t get a good amount of sleep or if I’m hungry, if I’m having a bad day, that gets passed on to our relationship,” he added.
“But love is work. You gotta work at it. But it’s the most beautiful thing and you get the most special moments. And life is just so much more happy when you can share it with somebody.”
Jacinto’s wife Doan is best known for starring in series like Warrior and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She most recently appeared in the 21st season of Grey’s Anatomy. Jacinto’s new movie Freakier Friday is in theaters now.
