Justin Timberlake ended his two-year world tour with a vulnerable announcement. The singer disclosed a health diagnosis that has affected him on and off-stage, potentially explaining criticisms of his performances posted online by concert attendees. The 44-year-old revealed that he was diagnosed with Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness, and is dealing with long-term symptoms, but he is choosing to push forward.
Timberlake shared the news on Instagram, noting that the statement was difficult for him to make because he’s a pretty private person. “I’ve been battling some health issues, and was diagnosed with Lyme disease—which I don’t say so you feel bad for me—but to shed some light on what I’ve been up against behind the scenes,” he began. “If you’ve experienced this disease or know someone who has—then you’re aware: Living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically.”
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by the bites of blacklegged ticks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Initial signs of infection are a target-shaped rash at the bite site, which can be followed by an array of symptoms (if the tick isn’t promptly removed) that range from fever and headache to facial drooping, joint swelling, and nerve pain, depending on the severity of infection. Lyme disease is usually treated with antibiotics. However, some people face long-term chronic symptoms after treatment that can take months to subside, per the CDC.
“When I first got the diagnosis, I was shocked for sure,” Timberlake continued. “But, at least I could understand why I would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness. I was faced with a personal decision. Stop touring? Or, keep going and figure it out. I decided the joy that performing brings me far outweighs the fleeting stress my body was feeling. I’m so glad I kept going.”
The singer said his persistence proved his own “mental tenacity” and gave him “so many special moments” on stage. “I was reluctant to talk about this because I was always raised to keep something like this to yourself,” he added. “But I am trying to be more transparent about my struggles so that they aren’t misinterpreted. Sharing all of this with the hope that we can all find a way to be more connected. I’d like to do my part to help others experiencing this disease too.”
Fans and friends extended love and support in the comments, which Timberlake accepted with gratitude. “Love each other,” he concluded. “Be good to each other. Don’t take it for granted.
