Katie Lowes and Adam Shapiro are celebrating 13 years of marriage!
A day before their June 23 wedding anniversary, the Scandal alum, 42, and The Bear actor stepped out for a “date night” at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s NextGen Annual Summer Party.
“It is our date night and it’s our wedding anniversary. 13 years married,” Lowes told PEOPLE at the Sunday, June 22, event, which was held on the rooftop of The Aster in Los Angeles. “We wanted to party a little bit,” added Shapiro. “For sure.”
The couple — who married in 2012 — went on to share the secrets to the longevity of their love, starting with “Couples therapy,” per Shapiro. “Pretty much couples therapy.”

“Yes! That helps,” Lowes agreed. “We’re both actors. Obviously. Couples therapy. We love to talk it out. We love personal therapy. Couples therapy. If therapy is in the word, we’re doing it.”
“And then traveling,” Shapiro added. “I think getting out of town and forgetting all the insanity of Hollywood and grounding yourself in another country.”
Plus, the couple said, centering laughter and loved ones in their lives helps, too. “And humor. He’s very, very, very funny,” Lowes said of her beau, as he agreed that cracking “a few jokes always helps too.”
“Very helpful,” the Scandal alum echoed, adding that the pair also have “wonderful families that get along very well, and I don’t know. We’ve been very lucky thus far. Knock on wood.”

As for their plans for the day of their actual anniversary, Lowes said she and the Shappy Pretzel owner planned to go on a date while their two kids — son Albee, 7, and daughter Vera Fay, 4 — are at day camp.
The duo’s celebration will include “some chips, some Aperol spritzes,” per Shapiro. “Yeah, we’re going to have Aperol spritzes,” Lowes agreed, adding, “That’s what we had on our honeymoon in Italy.”

Elsewhere during the couple’s chat with PEOPLE, they revealed what has surprised them in their marriage: Shapiro’s pretzel venture.
“I married an actor. I had no idea I married a baker,” Lowes said, as the company owner added, “I mean, no, she didn’t know that. But now that’s happening. And then, of course, she finds out she’s celiac, so she can’t eat any of the pretzels.”
“That’s also another shocker,” the Scandal star agreed, but Shapiro has a solution. His “goal now,” he said, “is to make the greatest gluten-free pretzel of all time” for his wife.
