As the weather warms and spring begins to bloom, we’re shedding layers and stepping into lighter styles. Each new season brings an opportunity to rethink your personal style, and the backbone of any good wardrobe is great jeans.

This spring, we’re seeing several new silhouettes emerging. After several years of hibernation, skinny jeans are back, having graced runways across both this February fashion month and last, from Diesel to Miu Miu. But more shapely styles are coming back too—though the Super Bowl is rarely a source of style inspiration, Kendrick Lamar’s choice of bootcut Celine jeans for his halftime show drove a huge spike in Google searches for flared jeans in the days that followed. And lengths are reaching new extremes, with capris on one end and denim that pools around the feet at the other.

The throughline here is nostalgia. From ’60s-inspired petal pushers to the flare jeans of the 2010s, the great thing about this spring’s denim trends is that you likely have many of them in the back of your closet. Here are seven styles to try this season.

Ever since Kendrick Lamar took to the Superbowl stage in a pair of perfect jeans—fitted around the thighs, flared past the knee, and slightly baggy at the hem—bootcut jeans have been enjoying a renaissance. They’re a current bestseller for Wrangler, says Vivian Rivetti, the brand’s VP of Global Design. The flattering silhouette helps elongate the legs, and looks great with a pointy shoe poking out from the bottom. They’re particularly elevated in a dark wash.

“We’re also seeing a potential return of the skinny jean after several years of wider cut jeans being at the forefront of fashion,” says Rivetti. And controversial as they may be, skinny jeans are ultra versatile. They’re like the equivalent of a neutral color but for silhouettes—whether you prefer an oversized top or something more fitted, the understated proportions of a skinny jean goes with everything.

Structured Oversized Jeans

Though slouchy, baggy boyfriend jeans have dominated the past few years, this spring, oversized jeans are taking new, more structured forms. This pair features a bubble hem, but we’re also seeing straight hems and seams down the center.

Capris

Capris came back in full force last summer, having showed up in a fall collection The Row and been spotted on street style stars like Emily Ratajakowski and Bella Hadid. Their first foray back into the limelight featured more minimalistic iterations, like the simple black pairs made famous by Audrey Hepburn. But this season, denim capris are calling. The ultra-cropped look makes for the perfect transitional pant when you want to show just a little bit of leg.

Dark Wash Denim

The resurgence of raw and Selvidge denim means we’re favoring darker washes all around. The rich indigo color looks polished and a bit more formal. It’s the kind of denim that doesn’t look out of place at work or a nice dinner.

Wide(ish) Leg Jeans

There’s something universally flattering about wide-leg jeans. It’s a timeless shape that goes with everything. (There’s a pair that Dakota Johnson wore to a farmers market in 2019 that I still think about.) This season, wide-leg jeans are leaning high rise, with less of a flare and more of a gentle expansion from the waist on.

Cuffed Denim

Over the past decade, denim trends swung from cropped at the ankle to pooling around the feet. Now we’ve settled somewhere in the middle, with straight-leg jeans featuring a thick, structured cuff. It’s a small detail with a big impact, adding shape and texture to your everyday jeans.
