The Gist
Loafers are a shoe-lover’s favorite for good reason, thanks to their endless versatility.
From chunky soles, square toes, rich textures, to bold colors there’s a loafer style for you.
Following a long day of commuting, I’m reminded that loafers are the shoe choice I never regret wearing. For anybody who doesn’t wear heels (me), they’re the ideal alternative for a comfortable shoe that is as elevated as it is fresh. While the day-to-night idea is seemingly dated, this is an occasion where the card can definitely be played.
Loafers are a rare breed of footwear that transcends both settings and seasons. A fall coffee stroll in leggings? Approved. A summer workday in a shorts suit? Absolutely. A winter date night with tights? My dream date. Loafers can be off-duty, on the clock, or somewhere in between without sacrificing comfort along the way.
And, there’s a reason they’re a clear staple in both well-edited and trend-forward wardrobes. Their unmatched wearability makes them one of my favorite types of closet classics: an investment piece. A decades-old vintage pair can still look off-the-runway when styled in an authentic, modern way. While the silhouette isn’t always a new invention (and doesn’t need to be), subtle design updates such as chunky soles, square toes, rich textures, or bold colors keep novelty and relevancy without relying on fleeting trends.
Not to mention, the vast range of impeccable loafers is second to none. Minimalists can opt for slim, classic leather styles, while those with a more expressive wardrobe may gravitate toward high-shine patent or lug-sole versions. The shoe should fit your closet, your closet shouldn’t have to fit the shoe.
While the seasonless style maintains its title, the transition into fall ‘fits offers endless opportunities to play with loafer-grounded looks. Your flirty midiskirt, top-of-the-drawer denim, and statement co-ords are all equally eager for a loafer moment (and that says a lot).
Ahead, explore 10 accessible, yet exciting, loafer styling ideas that you’ll want to try ASAP.

An adorable skirt suit and a refined loafer are the quintessential pairing. If you have a set that speaks for itself, then the accessories will always fall in line. An everyday black T-shirt and charming set are the canvas for a grouping of complementary accessories. Opting for an embellished bag and a stylish sock makes room for sophisticated shades and a straightforward loafer.

The preppy polo-clad era lends itself perfectly to a trusty loafer. The (seemingly) lived-in brown leather flawlessly complements an easy-going and authentic outfit. To take it to the next level, match your opticals to your belt and your loafer.

It’s nearly impossible to go wrong with a matching set. When wearing an all-over print, neutral accessories create the ideal balance. The shape of your bag, frames, and loafers are essential, while the socks add a fashion lover’s finishing touch.

A midiskirt is loafer-level in its versatility, so marrying the two makes for a star-crossed outfit. The effortless combination of textures, signature silhouettes, and unexpected details adds “wrong-shoe theory” perfection. If you’re keeping it kitschy with a headpiece or a bright bag, anchoring the ensemble in a sturdy brown loafer is a solid choice.

To channel the Carolyn-Basette Kennedy vibe, a simple trench coat, jeans, and loafers combination can never steer you wrong. The tousled bun and casual denim add to why this equation is never broken. Square-toe loafers are one of the simplest and timeless, yet trendy, shoe silhouettes.

The dichotomy of this mix of softness and structure is the most unperfect, perfect match. A whimsical and romantic shape is offset by darker, harder accessories: a strong sunglass, a black shoulder bag, and a menswear-inspired loafer. While this dress makes an exaggerated statement, don’t be afraid to try it with any of your favorite frilly frocks.

Borrowing from the boys is a transitional trick I’ve already been implementing. To get past donning a full suit, style a button-down, tie, and pleated skirt with a classic loafer. Uniformity and modernity at their finest.

Alexa Chung is a style savant, so who better to turn to for loafer-look inspiration? Playing with proportion is key here, from the oversized blazer and bag to the barely-there tights and pants, all punctuated by a refined loafer. This is the fashion crowd’s guide to a transitional nighttime ensemble.

Creativity in workwear is all about blending professionalism with personal style, and the shorts suit is one of my choice ways to do that in warmer weather. An oversized blazer and longline shorts offer a polished foundation, while the chunky loafers and an easy ball cap inject fun and practicality. This combination proves workwear doesn’t have to be one note and that tailored pieces with unexpected accessories and comfortable shoes always work

These red loafers are setting the tone, literally. Fall tonal dressing is a total skill and this look might be the masterclass. Intentional yet effortless combinations of burgundy, pomegranate, and chestnut are topped off with bold cherry red patent loafers.
