Zooey Deschanel isn’t afraid to take a trip down fashion memory lane to examine the good, the bad and the ultra-twee!
In a new Instagram post, the actress and twee style icon — she is practically synonymous with the whimsical, retro-inspired fashion that dominated the mid-2000s and early 2010s — looked back at some of her “old looks,” both reviewing them within their respective era and deciding what pieces still fit into her personal style today.
“I actually don’t dislike almost any of these,” Deschanel, 45, prefaced the March 18 video before kicking it off with a look (and Pinterest fixture) that doubles as a layering masterclass, like many looks she’s worn.
“I love this outfit,” Deschanel said of the undated ‘fit, a long-sleeve layered under a striped fitted T-shirt, which she paired with an overall dress.

“I think it’s such a cool look. It’s actually a photo shoot I still think about,” the New Girl alum added before rating the look an “A++.” (She previously reacted to the same shot in 2020, but honed in on the owl-covered backdrop, not her look, writing: “My only regret is never having asked where they got this incredible wallpaper.”)
Next, the Almost Famous actress reacted to “some kind of paparazzi shot” depicting a casual-leaning look: a pair of vintage Levi’s jeans, layered but loose-fitting top situation and heels, all of which she said she would still wear — minus the footwear.
“I threw this on after some kind of appearance or something,” the star recalled. Today, she “wouldn’t wear heels with the jeans. I hate wearing heels,” she added.
Deschanel then examined a snapshot of herself in a retro dress in a particularly eye-catching shade of powdery pink. “I love that look. This, you know, ‘50s look,” she said, adding that the “detailing on the dress is really pretty.”

“I love the color. I like a very icy, pale pink,” the (500) Days of Summer star added of the vintage-inspired piece. “I think it’s cute.”

Turning back time nearly two decades, the actress then looked at a D.I.Y. ensemble she wore to a Marc Jacobs fashion show in 2006. “They didn’t have anything that fit me well, and the show was the next day so I just grabbed this oversized cardigan [and] safety-pinned it so it was kind of fitted,” she recalled. “I love it. I would wear it every day.”
The next look Deschanel examined — an ultra-twee, head-to-toe-Gucci ‘fit she wore to the 2007 Sundance Film Festival — is also one she can still wear, because she still has all of the pieces.
“I still have this. Like right now, I could probably go upstairs and grab it,” Deschanel said. “I love it! I love the colors. I think it’s so cute!”

Another ‘fit the star would wear today? A 2007 look consisting of a flowy, ivory blouse and high-waisted black trousers — though she would ditch the heels she originally paired with them.
“I love this look. Classic me. I would wear this tomorrow,” Deschanel said of the ensemble — minus the ultra-high shoes. “We know how I feel about high heels,” the actress continued. “They’re not comfortable, but they’re really cute.”
“And,” she added, “I wish I still looked this young.”

Deschanel wrapped the video by looking at some (more recent) red carpet looks, including her 2013 Golden Globes look, a strapless red gown and pearl necklace — a styling choice she lauded.
“I wanted to wear a pearl jewelry look because it’s sort of underrepresented on the red carpet,” she recalled. “That was kind of fun. And the dress is so classic — no complaints.”
Finally, Deschanel reviewed a custom Patou gown she wore to the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. She still loves the black, floor-length dress, especially because — unlike some of the heel-heavy looks her younger self wore — it was “actually really comfortable.”
Plus, the gown “fit so perfectly,” she said, adding,“I felt classic and pretty in it.”
All in all, the actress’s attitude toward all of her personal style, from the mid-2000s until now, can be summed up using the caption of her fashion review video: “No regrets.”
