President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wore a t-shirt while meeting with President Donald Trump’s envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, on Monday, according to footage posted to X.
The White House reportedly inquired to Ukrainian officials whether Zelenskyy would don a suit while meeting President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Axios. Zelenskyy could be seen wearing a black t-shirt during the meeting in the video posted by Anton Gerashchenko. “[W]e are thankful to president for this invitation and the form of what we will have,” Zelenskyy said in the video. “It’s important signals about security guarantees and that’s why it’s important that we are together with the United States and Europe and the president accepted the meeting, common meeting, also after our bilateral common meeting with Europeans.”
The Ukrainian president added that he was “so grateful” that major European leaders would be joining the meeting.
Zelenskyy is well-known for wearing casual and military outfits during official diplomatic visits and will reportedly wear the identical black jacket he wore for the NATO summit in June, sources told Axios. Zelenskyy’s refusal to wear common formal clothing for official visits was reportedly one minor factor leading to Trump’s explosive White House exchange with him in February.
Trump wrote on Truth Social Sunday that Zelenskyy could end his war with Russia if he agreed to drop both his pursuit of NATO membership and aspirations to retake Crimea after Russia seized the region in 2014.
“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight,” Trump wrote. “Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!”
