Democratic strategist James Carville ranted for over four minutes on a Tuesday podcast about how the Democratic Party has alienated male voters.
President Donald Trump won 55% of male voters in the 2024 election, while former Vice President Kamala Harris received just 43%, according to a CNN exit poll. Carville, on “The People’s Cabinet,” argued that Democrats appear to neglect and disrespect men, despite them making up around half of the electorate. “If you ever want to understand the problem we have with younger men, listen to NPR for five minutes, four times a day, and you will understand,” Carville said. “I single them out, there are plenty of other people.”
The Democratic strategist called out particular tropes to bolster his argument.
“They were told, ‘The future is female.’ ‘You must always believe the woman is never wrong.’ ‘#MeToo,’” he said.
“And men are like, ‘Shit, do I count? What about my life? I mean, we’re only 48% of the voting population,’” he added.
Carville asserted that during every election, people tell him that females, such as suburban women and non-white women, will be the deciders.
“Let’s say you work in an Atlanta tire shop, nine–ten hours a day. You’re changing tires … You’re working your ass off. It’s hot. Okay? You go home. You want a cold beer, you want a hamburger and you want to watch the football game,” he said. “‘No. No. You can’t do that. Not football. No. No hamburgers. How many calories does that have? Do you know what that does? Beer? No. You should be drinking a nice fruit spritzer or something.’ They’re like, ‘Oh, get off of my back.’ Right? And then, ‘If you have sex, you must wear a condom.’ We just never communicated with them.”
Carville said the Democratic Party appears as though it is “sticking [its] finger in everybody’s face about personal behavior.” He further argued that American culture no longer pays attention to white men.
“I understand we’ve had tectonic societal shifts, demographic shifts in this country. But there are no television shows about these people anymore. They’ve been erased from the culture … We’ve just erased them,” he added. “You don’t exist. No one sees you. No one cares about you. You’ve had it made all your life. And a lot of these people say, ‘I got it made? What are you talking about?’ And we just lecture people too much. As opposed to saying, ‘Man, you work hard.’”
“We do have a male problem. And a lot of it is urban culture. It really is,” Carville concluded. “And when I say ‘urban,’ urban, left-wing kind of NPR culture has really, really hurt us.”
Carville also told Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar during a May episode of his “Politics War Room” podcast to leave the Democratic Party after her comments attacking white men resurfaced.
Omar asserted the U.S. “should be more fearful of white men across our country because they are actually causing most of the deaths within this country” during a 2018 Al Jazeera interview.
“Lady, why don’t you just get out the Democratic Party? Honestly, start your own movement … let’s just call [white men] 33.3% of the entire election. Well, let’s just run against them, ’cause that’s so goddamn smart,” he said at the time. “All right, so now we’re going to have a campaign by the progressive left against white men, who vote about a third of everybody that votes in an election.”
“Goddamn, these people are just helpless. They cannot be helped. There’s nothing you can do to help them,” he added. “They don’t want to be helped. And if they had any guts, they’d start their own goddamn political party and get out of ours.”
