The latest drop from Miley Cyrus’s upcoming album really is something beautiful.
Miley’s moving new ballad “More to Lose” was written and produced with Autumn Rowe, Michael Pollack, Jonathan Rado, Shawn Everett, and BJ Burton, and sees the singer mourning the loss of a relationship she tried to make the most of.
Fans noticed that she may be alluding to her on-again-off-again romance with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. The multihyphenate hasn’t explicitly confirmed who the song was inspired by, but she first previewed the track with an acoustic piano performance at Moncler’s pre-Met Gala party on May 3, where she noted some of her exes were in the room.

“On a song like ‘More to Lose,’ I tried to keep it a singular take,” Miley explained in a teaser video posted ahead of the song’s release. “I added my harmonies or adlibs at the end, but it’s really a song that’s more of a story, and I never want that to be interrupted, or overthought, or chasing perfection. I never wanted ‘More to Lose’ to feel perfect—I wanted it to sound meaningful and emotional.”
Noted, Miley. Let’s grab a box of tissues and get into the potential meaning of the song, shall we?
Lyrics provided by Genius.
[Verse 1]
The more I stay, the less I go
We’re toe to toe, but I’m hanging on the wire
Stumbled down the same road before
Say I’m leavin’, but I’m only playing liar
’Cause when you’re lookin’ like
There’s truly no time to prepare, because the song starts on an incredibly emotional note. From the jump, she gave the relationship another chance. This could allude to the singer reconciling with Liam Hemsworth in 2016, three years after their initial split. She admits she’s overstayed her welcome as she tried to leave but couldn’t.
[Pre-Chorus]
A movie star in a worn-out coat
Yeah, throw away my mind
And it happens all the time
If you want to take this literally, the movie star in question could be Liam:
[Chorus]
I stay
When the ecstasy is far away
And I pray
That it’s comin’ ’round again
And you say it
But I wish it wasn’t true, oh
I knew someday that one would have to choose
I just thought we had more to lose
Though happiness or love faded away over time, Miley chose to see the relationship through and stay, no matter how much pain it was causing. As much as she didn’t want to go, she left because her partner wasn’t fighting for her in the same way she did for them.
During a Q&A with Spotify, Miley opened up about her 2018 house fire where she lost everything, but felt like it was “the biggest blessing.”
“Losing everything and being able to rebuild and be purposeful and choose every piece that I’m going to collect—or also just about the people in my life,” she explained. “When my house burned down, a lot of my relationships also burned down, and that just led me to such magic and to have so much gratitude. I would’ve told my younger self to appreciate those darker times because, like I said, they are only leading you into the light.”
[Post-Chorus]
Mm-mm
Mm-mm
[Verse 2]
The TV’s on, but I don’t know
My tears are streamin’ like our favoritе show tonight
Tonight
Memories fade likе denim jeans
I try to chase when you’re runnin’ through my mind
’Cause, God, you’re lookin’ like
While they still lived their day-to-day lives together, she sat in her sadness. Yet, she still wanted to follow the connection.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Chorus]
[Bridge]
Na, na-na, na-na
Na, na-na, na-na, yeah
[Pre-Chorus]
Yeah, you’re lookin’ like a movie star in a worn-out coat
So I throw away my pride
It happens all the time
God, it happens all the time
[Chorus]
[Post-Chorus]
