Actress Ayo Edebiri might be best known to fans in the chef’s whites and a bandana she dons for her role in The Bear, but the star is more than capable of glamming things up—a fact she more than proved when she hit the Met Gala carpet tonight.
For the event, she chose a full length white gown with a deep V neckline that was covered in looping strands of bright red beads. She topped the dress with a black leather jacket, cut in the style of tuxedo coat with flowing tails, paying homage to the evening’s theme, “Tailored for You.” She took the menswear inspiration a step further with the high collar of her dress, which came to points, evoking the feel of a classic button down.
The dress code was chosen as a nod to the annual Costume Institute exhibition, for which the gala serves as both an opening and a fundraiser. This year’s exhibit is titled Superfine: Tailoring Black Style and is “a cultural and historical examination of Black style over three hundred years through the concept of dandyism.”
Edebiri, who is serving on the host committee for this year’s gala, shared her experience of Black fashion and suiting with Vogue ahead of the gala, saying in an editorial, “I think with a lot of African people, your traditional outfits get made. As a child, I thought it was torture, but now I have very precious memories of family and friends pinning clothes on me—it’s a really intimate, beautiful thing.”
Last year, she made her Met Gala debut in a custom Loewe floral gown with a halter neckline and backless silhouette.
