NEED TO KNOW

  • Victoria Olegario, 21, recently went viral on X for posting her office outfits of the day

  • Her polarizing looks made waves, because some people didn’t think her looks were appropriate for an office setting

  • Olegario, who works in fashion, tells PEOPLE that her outfits are work-appropriate for her office and that more workplaces should have lenient dress codes

This fashionista has inadvertently launched a discourse on what and what not to wear to work, by posting her various alternative “office outfit[s] of the day” on X.

On July 7, Victora Olegario, 21, posted her outfit before heading out the door to her job in fashion at a New York City-based modeling agency. Although she has regularly taken to her account to post her outfits, often with captions like “i fear i could never be a normal corporate girl,” this specific ensemble received 717 thousand views and plenty of posts slamming her choice of attire.

“Its an office no[t] COACHELLA, like people Need to understand the places, and the dress code,” one user wrote in a reply that reached 6.2 million views. “yeah this looks great , you look cool and chic, i love it for a festival or going to a club, but not for an office, very out of place and forced.”

Olegario tells PEOPLE she does not usually respond to hate as she has had her account since she was 14 years old and “knows better.”

“But if I’m in the mood to be a bitch, I’ll match their energy and say something catty or sarcastic,” she adds.

She describes her personal style as an “amalgamation of different eras of rock and roll,” citing artists like Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin. She tells PEOPLE that she loves to wear things that represent her “young wild and free spirit,” and she is certainly not afraid to show off that free spirit at work.

“The younger generation isn’t interested in dressing in stuffy monotone outfits everyday like they did in the 1950s.” she says.

Olegario will wear anything ranging from loose silhouettes or tight clothes, and she is a “huge fan” of wearing no bra. “I think we as a society just need to free the nip,” she says.

She clapped back at people disapproving of her choice of office wear by informing them that she works in fashion. “Personally my coworkers were complimenting my outfit but stay mad over your dress code!” she added in one of her replies.

She’s afforded the luxury of a looser dress code, which isn’t always the case in an office setting. It allows her the freedom to express herself through clothing and accessories.

Several months ago, the “office siren” trend blew up on TikTok, largely due to celebrities sporting blazers more than ever, and even brands like Aritizia launching campaigns featuring pieces to get the look.

The ’90s- and early 2000s-inspired trend, complete with pinstripe suits, button-down blouses and kitten heels also sparked conversation about how to come dressed to impress at work, with reactions resulting in some content creators using their platforms to explain how to achieve the look without being reported to human resources.

“As long as you’re not naked, you can wear whatever you want.” Olegario says of the dress code at her own workplace. She noted that she would love to see more people follow suit, saying she thinks “office dress culture should be a lot more lenient than it currently is.”
