A couple is at odds over who should and shouldn’t be able to have a spare key to their new house

A woman believes her fiancé “crossed a boundary” by giving his mother a key to their house without consulting her first, but he disagrees.
The 30-year-old woman explained on Reddit that she and her fiancé, 32, recently moved into their first home together.
“We were setting up spare keys when I noticed one was missing,” she recalls. “He told me he already gave it to his mom ‘just in case.’ ”
“His mom is nice, but she’s very… involved. She’s the type to rearrange our kitchen because she thinks it’s ‘better that way,’” she continues.

When she told him that she was “not comfortable” with his mom having a key without her “consent,” he said she was “being dramatic, and that it’s normal for parents to have one.”
Still, she held her ground and suggested that they “should both agree on who gets a key,” since they share the home.
However, he insisted she was “overreacting and controlling.”
Now, the woman turns to Reddit to see if she is in the wrong for being upset about the situation.
Most people in the comments section agreed that she had every right to ask to be included in decisions regarding their home and safety.
“I would tell him that his mother is not allowed to use the keys except in an emergency or if she’s specifically asked to use it,” one person commented. “Tell him that if she uses it for any other reason, she loses key privileges.”
Another person flipped the fiancé’s rational back on him, writing, “He’s controlling by deciding who gets a key without consulting you. That essentially the same as he put himself in charge. That’s controlling.”
