  • A woman says she’s disinviting her mom from her birthday party after the woman caused a scene at her graduation ceremony

A 23-year-old woman says she’s disinvited her own mom from her birthday party, weeks after she “ruined” her graduation day celebration.

In a post shared to Reddit, the woman writes that she recently graduated from college and was the first in her family to attend university.

“I fought tooth and nail to get here,” she writes. “I worked two part-time jobs while keeping up with full-time classes. I skipped holidays, missed family events, and barely slept during finals. So many nights I sat in my tiny apartment wondering if it was worth it. But I finally made it, and I was so proud of myself.”

She continues: “I was looking forward to graduation day more than anything. I bought a beautiful whiteish dress weeks in advance, paid for my own cap and gown, and even hired a photographer to take family photos after the ceremony. I invited everyone including my dad, my siblings, a few close friends, and of course, my mom.”

Her mom came to the graduation day festivities, but “showed up two hours late, completely missing the ceremony,” she writes.

“I had already walked the stage, taken pictures, and was at the reception when she finally arrived. I could see she was in a sour mood even without talking to her,” she continues. “I went to hug her and said I was glad she could made it, and the first thing she said was, ‘You couldn’t wait for me, just to take a stupid photo?!’ She wasn’t joking. She was genuinely upset that I hadn’t delayed my graduation to accommodate her lateness.”

At that point, the woman writes that the photographer had already left, so the woman asked her mom to take a photo with someone’s phone — but her mom “rolled her eyes” and refused.

“I tried to brush it off, but she kept picking at everything. She hated the photos I took without her. She hated that my dad and stepmom were there. She accused me of ‘choosing sides’ when I was just trying to enjoy my own darn graduation, then she just started crying, full on sobbing in front of everyone, saying how she felt ‘left out’ and ‘disrespected,’ completely ignoring the fact that she’s the one who showed up late,” she writes.

Eventually, the mom “walked out of the venue,” screaming at the woman for being “inconsiderate.”

The situation devolved further, when the woman later decided to disinvite her mom from her birthday party just weeks after the graduation.

“I told my mom flatly that I didn’t want her at my party this year … She answered saying she is going to cut contact with me,” the woman writes.

Others on Reddit are weighing in on the situation, with one writing, “You made the right choice by cutting her off from your birthday and if she doesn’t understand the importance of what she did at your graduation day it’s her problem and not yours.”

Added another commenter: “I think you have graduated not only from college, but into a new phase of adulthood, of taking responsibility for your own energy, your own needs, your own boundaries. Your mother may indeed love you (love is complicated. Source: I had a mother) but it sounds like that’s not the operating force in your relationship with her.”
