Wisconsin Badgers: The March Madness Sleeper That No One Wants to Face

The Wisconsin Badgers are peaking at the perfect time, with their perimeter-shooting big men and resilient backcourt making them a prime March Madness sleeper that no top seed will want to face in 2026.

The Wisconsin Badgers arrived at the Big Ten tournament with little fanfare but left with a warning for the entire NCAA Tournament field. In a semifinal thriller, Wisconsin erased a 15-point deficit against top-ranked Michigan, ultimately falling 68-65 on a last-second 3-pointer by Yaxel Lendeborg, a detail confirmed by Yahoo Sports.

This near-upset wasn’t a fluke. Wisconsin had already beaten Michigan once during the regular season, handing the Wolverines their only conference loss, a fact highlighted by Yahoo Sports. At 24-10 with losses to Oregon, USC, and Indiana, the Badgers might not appear on most Final Four projections, but their recent performances suggest they are built for March.

“We’ve all grown,” said Austin Rapp after scoring 18 points on six 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes against Michigan. “We’re starting to show we can compete with anyone in the country.”

The key to Wisconsin’s rise is offensive versatility that defies traditional Badger basketball. Coach Greg Gard has deployed a lineup with multiple big men who can stretch the floor. Beyond Rapp’s clutch shooting, Aleksas Bieliauskas (6-foot-10) drained three 3s against Michigan. Nolan Winter, a 7-footer missing his fourth game with an ankle injury, went 3-of-4 from deep in the regular-season win over Michigan.

“I think we probably make a lot of teams uncomfortable because of that attribute to our team,” Gard remarked.

This isn’t the slow-paced, post-oriented Wisconsin of the Frank Kaminsky era that reached back-to-back Final Fours in 2013 and 2014. While those teams were formidable, this Badgers squad can score in transition and from the perimeter, with guards Nick Boyd and John Blackwell forming one of the country’s most underrated backcourts. Take away the paint, and the bigs can light you up from outside. Don’t let them get good looks, and Boyd and Blackwell will tag you for 50.

Guard John Blackwell emphasized the coaching philosophy: “That’s one thing we try to embed in these guys is you’ve got to keep shooting. You’ve got to stay with your confidence. I don’t want them gun shy.”

The ability to score in bunches was on full display against Michigan. In the first half alone, it took about 2½ minutes for Wisconsin to turn a tie game into a seven-point lead, with Rapp making five 3-pointers in a row in just three minutes. This explosive potential makes them a dangerous draw for any higher seed.

Importantly, Wisconsin’s growth has been exponential throughout the season. “This group understands how good they are, but you get to this point and time of the year, they’re all good,” Gard said after the Big Ten tournament win over Purdue. “That’s what I said a week ago when we won at Purdue, this group has gotten better. I think we can still get better.”

The Big Ten tournament provided invaluable experience for younger players like Rapp and Bieliauskas, who were in their first seasons at Wisconsin. Their confidence is now soaring, and the team’s cohesion is peaking at the perfect time.

For bracketologists and fans, Wisconsin represents a classic sleeper pick—a team with the talent and momentum to advance deep into the tournament without the spotlight. Their unique blend of size and shooting could spell trouble for opponents who underestimate them.

As Selection Sunday approaches, teams hoping to avoid a Cinderella story should beware. The Badgers are peaking, versatile, and fearless—a combination that could turn March Madness on its head.
