Winona Ryder is forever a style icon.

In a video interview with Elle UK, shared to Instagram on Thursday, Aug. 21, the 53-year-old actress reflected on her influential hairstyle in the ’90s, specifically in the 1994 romantic comedy Reality Bites.

“All during the ’90s I cut my own hair,” Ryder began, “and I remember being incredibly surprised and flattered when my Reality Bites haircut became popular … girls would go to the [hairdresser] and bring that picture in and I thought that was kinda cool.”

The Stranger Things actress also shared that there wasn’t much to her hair-cutting technique.

“I mean, I literally just put my head upside down and went like that with the scissors, and I did that for any of my short hair,” she explained.

Ryder sported a short, choppy hairstyle in Reality Bites, in which she stars as budding filmmaker Lelaina Pierce. The film follows four friends who are recent college graduates navigating the economic recession in the early ’90s.

Fans in the comments of Elle UK‘s post praised Ryder’s DIY approach.

“I never knew this. I’ve always admired Winona’s uber cool 😎 style,” one wrote. “A great time to find out as I started cutting my own hair last year 🖤🙌👏”

“Winona could rock any hairstyle regardless!” shared another.

A third simply wrote: “Legend.”

In 2024, the actress opened up about her high school classmates’ reaction to her appearance in the 1988 film Beetlejuice.

“I remember thinking that it was going to, like, change my status, and it made it worse,” the actress, who played the role of Lydia Deetz, told Esquire UK in an interview published on Aug. 29. “They were like, ‘You’re a witch! You’re a freak!’ It amplified it. I was like, ‘But I’m in a movie!’ ”

Ryder, who was 15 during filming and 16 when the movie was released, also said that she was “very much” like her character Lydia at the time.

“They didn’t have to do much with me,” she said. “My brother found a picture of me taken like a month before that audition. I’d dyed my hair blue-black, I had these crazy short bangs, and I dressed in black.”

Thirty-six years later, Ryder reprised her role in director Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In the 2024 film, the star sported the same spiky fringe and dark eyeliner that she wore in the original movie.

Ryder also nodded to the iconic character throughout the sequel’s press tour. In August 2024, she wore a Lydia Deetz-inspired look at the world premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice at the Venice International Film Festival. Her costar Jenna Ortega also channeled many of Ryder’s looks from the original movie throughout the tour.
