Nowadays, everyone and their mother has seen (and probably fallen in love with) the classic 1988 dark comedy, Heathers.

Starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, Heathers acted as an unorthodox take on the traditional teen comedy genre, instead opting for a brutally satirical portrait of social cliques, high school popularity and mental health, among other subjects.

As respected and universally well-received as Heathers has become in recent years, it’s worth noting that most critics treated Heathers with a notably icy response in 1988, causing the film to obtain a level of controversy among contemporary viewers.

Looking back at the film, Heathers actor Winona Ryder admitted she knew that the project was a risk even as she signed on to star in it, leading her toElle UK, “I was told I was never gonna work again if I did Heathers.”

While things obviously worked out well for the Stranger Things star, the 53-year-old Ryder recalled losing out on a dream project with one of Hollywood’s most famous icons.

“I did lose a job,” Ryder told Elle. “You remember the movie The Freshman?”

Released in 1990, The Freshman starred Matthew Broderick as a New York film student who finds himself in the employ of Marlon Brando’s Carmine Sabatini: an enigmatic businessman that reportedly inspired The Godfather‘s Vito Corleone. (A role Brando famously played in 1972.)

Initially, Ryder was cast opposite Brando and Broderick, although the movie’s producers soon changed their mind after seeing Heathers.

“They thought it was making fun of teen suicide,” Ryder remembered. They were deeply offended and, yeah, they revoked the offer.”

Adopting a comically dramatic sobbing voice, Ryder recalled thinking, “‘I’m like, “I can’t work with Marlon Brando?’ But I had to stand my ground. I wasn’t gonna apologize.”
