Will Shemar Moore Return to ‘Criminal Minds’ Now That ‘S.W.A.T.’ is Canceled?

After being canceled and uncanceled twice now, it seemed that S.W.A.T. might go on forever. But the sad news is that the cop drama, starring Shemar Moore in the lead role as Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, will finally end with a two-part series finale on Friday, May 16.

“To get canceled twice in a row and to get uncanceled twice in a row, I give kudos to me running my mouth on social media,” Moore told People, referring to his Instagram activism on behalf of the series. “Nothing lasts forever, but I fight.”

Fight he does. Moore tried to get Netflix to pick up S.W.A.T. after the people in power at CBS were adamant about not coming back for a ninth season, but as of this writing, it doesn’t seem to have worked.

He wrote in an Instagram post, “The family over at S.W.A.T. — we ain’t done chasing bad guys. Helicopter chases and motorcycle chases and car chases and blowing up stuff… we ain’t done. But if you force us to be finished, we thank you. Again, nothing lasts forever, and we know that. But hey, Netflix, holler at your boy.”

That leaves the door open for Moore to tackle new projects, or possibly some old ones. If he’s interested in continuing to chase bad guys, he could make a return to his role as Special Agent Derek Morgan on Criminal Minds: Evolution.

That said, it’s too late for him to return for Season 3 (Season 18 overall), which has already wrapped filming and will begin airing on Paramount+ on May 8. But if the series gets a pickup for an additional season, he would be a welcome addition.

“All I need is an invitation,” Moore told TV Insider. “I never forget where I came from. I’ve gone back to the soap opera that started my career three or four times. It started with The Young and the Restless, and then it was Criminal Minds. And that’s my evolution. Without The Young and the Restless, there’s no Criminal Minds. And without Criminal Minds, there’s no S.W.A.T. If they asked me to come visit, I would definitely do that.”

Moore, an original cast member, exited Criminal Minds during Season 11 but returned to reprise his role for the Season 12 finale and the fifth episode of Season 13. We’ll see if Derek Morgan might be showing his face around the BAU in Season 4 and beyond!
