When the Met Gala calls, Suki Waterhouse answers—this time, in her most dandified red carpet look yet. The English actress and singer is no stranger to the glamour-filled occasion. Waterhouse last attended the Met Gala in 2023 alongside fiancé Robert Pattison—just months before the couple welcomed their first child.
This year, Waterhouse attended solo, turning to longtime friend and designer Michael Kors for a look worthy of the special occasion. Inspired by the Met’s latest exhibit, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and the dress code “Tailored For You,” Waterhouse and Kors reimagined a classic black tuxedo vest—putting a bold, modern twist on traditional tailoring. “For Suki’s look, we decided to subvert an impeccably tailored men’s tailcoat into a sultry backless vest and matching slit skirt that riffs on the vents in a men’s tailored jacket,” Kors elaborates. The custom look was made complete with 100 carats of diamonds from Jacob & Co., a black clutch, and satin pumps. In a pre-Met Gala conversation with Bazaar, Waterhouse shares her experience working with Kors, her pre-carpet rituals, and what really goes on inside the high-profile affair.
Tell us about the look you’ll be wearing. What was the process behind creating it with Michael Kors?
The look I’m wearing is a black backless tuxedo vest with a matching high-slit skirt featuring a beautiful 12-foot train. It’s really spectacular. Working with Michael is always a dream and with this look we wanted to channel impeccably tailored men’s suiting.
Is there a particular detail or design element in your look that is symbolic and personal to you?
The slit on the skirt riffs on the vents in a men’s tailored jacket, which I think is so clever and really goes to show how much thought Michael puts into every little detail. This look is somehow incredibly feminine while playing off traditional men’s suiting.
Can you describe your reaction to seeing your finished look?
Pure excitement. I was like, ‘Is it Monday yet?!’ Michael truly brought the design to life. I loved how it all came together in the end. We wanted to create something really classic and timeless. I was so lucky to be in the hands of Michael and my fantastic glam and styling team.
What has it been like working with Michael on all of these different projects?
Michael is just so full of creativity and passion and he’s so hands-on, it’s really marvelous. To continue working with him and to be able to attend the Met Gala with him, it’s very full circle and quite a special moment for me. I mean it’s Michael at the Met, it’s quite iconic!
This will be your third Met Gala. What’s something about the Met Gala you would only know from attending the event?
The surprise of the musical guests—we don’t know who it will be beforehand but the anticipation of that is my favorite part of the night. Not even the hosts know who will perform!
What was the inspiration behind the glam for tonight?
We wanted to go with a pretty natural look but with tousled hair with the help of ABC products and some major eyelashes. We used Merit Beauty products for the makeup to keep it clean and fresh looking.
Do you have any pre-carpet rituals you do that people may not know about?
I need a good Coca Cola pre carpet.
Whose look are you most excited to see tonight?
I’m so excited to see Doechii! She’s going to wear something so outstanding, I’m sure of it. I’m so inspired by her.
What message do you want people to take away from your look this year?
That a perfectly tailored look never goes out of style!
