LeBron James has had to back out of the 2025 Met Gala, despite being named honorary chair of the event.
The star athlete announced the news just a few hours before the red carpet, revealing that his recently sustained knee injury has prevented him from attending the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” themed event.
“Unfortunately because of my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season I won’t be able to attend the Met Gala in NY tonight as so many people have been asking and congratulating me on!” he wrote on Twitter, confirming that his wife, Savannah will be there. “Hate to miss an historical event! My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!”
Per ESPN, LeBron injured himself during an April 30 game between the Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves and “suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain to his left knee.”

He was asked about how long he’ll play before retirement, saying “I don’t know. I don’t have an answer to that. Something I’ll sit down with my family, my wife and my support group and kind of just talk through it and see what happens. And just have a conversation with myself on how long I want to continue to play. I don’t know the answer to that right now, to be honest. So we’ll see.”
Wishing LeBron a speedy recovery!
