Fans couldn’t help but noting an unexpected connection to Miley Cyrus.
As Demi Lovato said “I do” to singer Jordan “Jutes” Lutes during an oceanfront Santa Barbara wedding on Sunday, May 25, all eyes were on the bride’s stunning custom wedding dress. Lovato chose to get married in a dreamy, off-the-shoulder pearl-toned gown from Vivienne Westwood—and people couldn’t help noticing that it looked a lot like another Disney Channel alum’s wedding dress. Fans think Lovato’s wedding dress has a sweet connection to Miley Cyrus, who got married to ex-husband Liam Hemsworth in 2018.
Disney fans were seeing double when Vogue debuted first photos of Lovato’s “pearl white” dress, which featured a structured corset bodice offset with draped silk satin fabric that created a plunging neckline and shoulder-baring silhouette. Several noted the gown’s similarities to Cyrus’s wedding dress, which was also custom-designed by Westwood. The gown also featured a similar heavy material with a silky sheen, a similar ivory color, off-the-shoulder neckline, and draping along the hips and skirt.

However, Lovato told Vogue that she got her inspiration from a popular Vivienne Westwood bridal gown style that she “found online,” and she worked with the team over five custom fittings to make it her own with an emphasis on the corset detailing.
“We were not only able to work off that [initial] inspiration, but we added touches that really make this dress so special to me,” Lovato told Vogue. “When I was thinking about [what dress style I wanted] I often found myself coming back to Vivienne’s designs—specifically how the silhouettes really compliment the curves in your body, and her use of corsets.”

Lovato, who styled her jet black hair in side-parted Old Hollywood-style curls for her big day, complemented her wedding dress’s dramatic train with an ivory tulle cathedral-style veil that trailed behind her.
It’s unclear whether Cyrus—who’s had an on-and-off friendship with Lovato since their Disney days—also took inspiration from the same model gown for her own nuptials, but she chose a less formal silk crepe fabric instead of Lovato’s silk satin for her 2018 nuptials.

Cyrus previously opened up about the pair’s enduring friendship while making an appearance on Bright Minded: Live With Miley show on Instagram in 2020. “Life is moving so fast that it’s usually hard to slow ourselves down and appreciate people in our lives, and you’ve been that person for me for so many years and we’ve been friends for so long,” Cyrus told Lovato during their surprise reunion.
She revealed that the pair had reconnected, sharing, “We can not talk forever and then some bullshit will go down, and I’ll just know you’re the person I want to reach out to. In dark times, it’s really important to reach towards those who are illuminated. I just think that you’re such a light—even if it took this crisis to get us connected again.”
