Why ‘America’s Got Talent’ Is Not New Tonight originally appeared on Parade.
Normally, it would be night eight of America’s Got Talent auditions, but instead, the hit NBC talent competition has decided to take a pause from Season 20 tryouts to air a special episode.
Tonight, AGT looks back at the best of the best auditions, those that have won a Golden Buzzer from judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Sofia Vergara and Mel B as well as judges from previous seasons.
After all, the Golden Buzzer goes back all the way to Season 9, when it was adapted from Germany’s Got Talent, where it originated.

“I got a phone call that they had come up with this idea in Germany that they had given people a Golden Buzzer and I thought that was a good idea,” Simon explains on tonight’s special episode. “It’s quite different from the way they do it. Over the years, it’s become the most important thing, certainly through the auditions.”
The two-hour special includes new commentary from Simon, Howie, Sofia and Mel B, backstage anecdotes and a look at how two minutes in front of the judges changed some of these contestants’ lives forever.
