Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger, teasing the Chicago Tribune‘s seemingly harsh review of the new fine-dining restaurant.
Few shows can spike heart rates (and tickle taste buds) quite like FX’s The Bear.
The Chicago-set restaurant “comedy” (that often veers into a soul-crushing drama) follows a successful fine-dining chef who returns home to manage his late brother’s Italian beef shop. The Bear arrived with humble expectations in 2022, but has since become one of TV’s most celebrated series.
Its first three seasons have won 21 Primetime Emmys, including acting nods for stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas.
Anticipation is high after the show’s third season, which wrapped last summer and ended on a major cliffhanger. Thankfully, FX renewed The Bear season 4 ahead of season 3’s premiere, meaning that the next batch of episodes has had plenty of time to plump up in the oven.
Read on for everything we know The Bear season 4, including its release date, cast, and plot details.
How did The Bear season 3 end?
FX
Jeremy Allen White as Carmy in ‘The Bear’ season 3
The Bear‘s third season had a high-stakes ending, teasing audiences with brief scraps from the restaurant’s pivotal Chicago Tribune review. The restaurant is “excellent,” but “stale.” It’s “simple,” but “complex.” It’s “innovative,” but “confusing.” Are these conflicting phrases truly what’s in the review — or a manifestation of Carmy’s (White) anxiety?
That’s unclear, but the calls coming in from Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt) aren’t a good sign. Neither is Carmy’s frustrated cry of “Motherf—er!”
As Unc made clear, a bad review could result in him closing the restaurant. His finances, after all, aren’t in a place where he can operate in the red.
Carmy’s controlling and graceless behavior throughout season 3 has alienated him from pretty much everyone. He and Richie (Moss-Bachrach) are in choppy waters. Sydney (Edebiri) is considering leaving the restaurant — and a partnership agreement — for a new gig with Ever chef Adam (Adam Shapiro). And Claire (Molly Gordon) is still waiting for an apology — or, well, anything — from Carmy after their break-up.
What is The Bear season 4 about?

While we don’t know specifics about The Bear season 4’s story, we do know that whatever’s in that Chicago Tribune review will impact the restaurant’s future and whether Carmy can mend the fences he tore down throughout season 3.
Speaking with Puck last year, FX head John Landgraf teased that, if season 3 was about “stuckness,” season 4 is about the opposite. “I was well aware that stuckness is not necessarily the most riveting [thing to watch],” he said. “But I also think there are so many things in that [season] that are just absolute masterpieces. And I will say, knowing what I do know about the upcoming season, for those that have stayed with it, they’re going to be really well rewarded. Because after stuckness comes unstuckness.”
Joanna Calo, a co-showrunner alongside creator Christopher Storer, described the season as “beautiful” to Brazilian outlet Omelete. “There’s a lot of joy this season,” Calo said at the premiere of Marvel’s Thunderbolts, which she co-wrote. “It’s not one of the meaner ones.”
When is The Bear season 4’s release date?
FX
Ebon Moss-Bacharach as Richie and Abby Elliott as Natalie in ‘The Bear’ season 3
Last year, Landgraf told Deadline that season 4 would debut in or around June 2025, approximately one year after the season 3 premiere.
Following reports that seasons 3 and 4 were filmed back-to-back, Landgraf confirmed to Deadline that “most” of season 4 was already completed. White predicted in a chat with Esquire UK that shooting would resume in early 2025.
In February, the cast and crew were spotted filming in various Chicago neighborhoods.
Will The Bear get a fifth season?
FX

It’s currently unknown whether The Bear‘s fourth season will be its last. Landgraf has made it clear, though, that the decision is in creator Christopher Storer’s hands. Last fall, he responded with a curt “accurate” when asked by Deadline if that was still the case.
But we wouldn’t be surprised if season 4 ends up being The Bear‘s last. White and Edebiri have both become in-demand film stars, while Moss-Bachrach is now beholden to the whims of the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to his role as Ben Grimm, a.k.a. The Thing, in The Fantastic Four. He’s already been announced as part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.
