‘We’re Going To Defy History’: Mike Johnson Makes Bold Prediction About GOP’s Future

House Speaker Mike Johnson predicted on CNN Wednesday that the Republican Party will break historical patterns and expand its majority in the House of Representatives during the upcoming midterm elections.

A Democratic memo said that Republicans’ head start in House seats has set the stage for a fierce battle over redistricting leading up to the 2030 Census. During an appearance on “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” Johnson said he’s confident the Republican Party will make history in the upcoming midterm elections by expanding its majority in the House, despite historical trends that have seen sitting presidents’ parties lose seats during their first midterm.

“We’re delivering for the people, and I’m very excited to go out and tell that story,” Johnson said.

“I’m very excited about the midterm election. You know that we’re going to defy history when we grow the majority in the House because it’s only twice in the last 90 years that a sitting president has picked up seats for his party in that first election cycle.”

Johnson then pointed to what he said was a favorable electoral map as well as the party’s track record of delivering key policies.

“But we’re going to do it this time. We have a very favorable map, regardless of how well this comes out. And we have policies. We’re delivering on our promises for the people. That’s going to make all the difference,” Johnson said.

Johnson said independent commissions in some states had skewed the results to benefit Democrats, often eliminating Republican seats.

“The devil’s always in the details, Jake. Some of these blue states have had commissions, and they have worked out so that they’ve eliminated Republican seats in their states. We’ve already seen that in some of the states around the country. So I’m not sure that’s the solution either. I tell you what, I will work with whatever we have at the end of the day. We have a solid, hardworking Republican majority in the House right now and the Senate,” Johnson told host Jake Tapper. (RELATED: Texas May Redraw Its House Lines Mid-Decade. Johnson’s confidence that the GOP will expand its House majority despite redistricting challenges aligns with Texas Democrats’ consideration of fleeing work to block a GOP-led push to redraw the state’s congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms. Some Democratic Texas lawmakers are weighing whether to break quorum during the special legislative session to block mid-decade redistricting, a tactic that mirrors their 2003 effort to thwart Republican control over district boundaries.

In 2021, Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed off on new congressional district maps following the 2020 Census, which were implemented for the 2022 midterm elections. At present, Democrats control 12 of the state’s 38 congressional seats.
