Watson is making it very clear that a main cast member isn’t making it out of the season finale alive.

During the Sunday, May 3, episode of the hit CBS series, Watson (Morris Chestnut) and the rest of his team had to race against the clock to save Stephens and Adams (Peter Mark Kendall). The group thought a trip to a mold infested basement for a case caused Adams — and then Stephens — to develop concerning neurological symptoms. But viewers already knew it was actually James Moriarty (Randall Park) to blame.

Moriarty even visited Watson — who had no idea it was him — to taunt Ingrid (Eve Harlow). By the end of the episode, Watson got clued into the fact that Moriarty used the DNA he acquired from Watson’s lab to engineer a virus that would only affect Adams. It caused Stephens’ health to deteriorate as well because they are twins with the same DNA makeup.

Adams was the first to fall into a coma and then Stephens quickly followed. Watson was able to find a way to cut out a virus from healthy brain cells — but they only have enough of the cure for one person. Either Stephens or Adams can get the dose, but not both.

The twist comes ahead of the show’s first season finale. Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes stories, Watson takes place six months after Moriarty killed the legendary detective.

“I did not consult any other [past] Watson [performances]. I did of course read some of the books and I looked at some of the other projects out there. For me, I felt that this character was different because the other Watsons are primarily not the focus,” Chestnut, 56, exclusively told Us Weekly in January. “The story is always told from Sherlock’s perspective. So this story is being told from Watson’s perspective in a very specific way. We’re part of the mythology, but the clinic and being a detective is not part of the mythology.”

At the time, Chestnut didn’t rule out the chance that viewers would get to meet the iconic detective on screen, adding, “I wish I knew if we were ever going to see Holmes in any type of capacity.”

He continued: “When Robert Downey Jr. is done with the Marvel universe, he can come on down. Robert can come on down. I think all of the portrayals of Holmes that I’ve seen have been just phenomenal performances. They all stepped up to the plate. So I’d be glad to have any of them.”

While Watson, Holmes and Moriarty are the most familiar names for books fans, the focus is currently on Watson’s team, which is made up of Harlow, 35, in the role of a highly skilled neurologist is, Kendal, 38, playing twin brothers who are infectious disease and functional medicine specialists. Watson also features Inga Schlingmann, who plays a specialist in rheumatology and immunology and Rochelle Aytes rounds out the cast as Watson’s ex-wife, Mary.

“Watson is not going to fully be able to do everything by himself. He needs his team,” Chestnut shared. “There are going to be moments throughout the season where certain things may have created some space between and his team and there may be some things that happen to draw them all closer together under a common cause.”

Watson airs Sundays on CBS at 9 p.m. ET. and new episodes stream the next day on Paramount+.
