Last week’s episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds brought us to the prototype of the Holodeck, responsible for some fan-favorite episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Prototypes are not without their issues and kinks, hence the reason we don’t see a “working” version until the days of TNG.
This week’s episode takes the away team on a mission that finds them trapped in a mystery of their own, except unlike a Holodeck, it’s not all fun and games inside. Read on for more about the episode “Through the Lens of Time,” including an exclusive sneak peek.

What happened in last week’s episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?
In “A Space Adventure Hour,” La’An (Christina Chong) was tasked with testing a prototype version of a holodeck with a fictional case incorporating Amelia Moon, a favorite fictional detective she read in her youth, but things started to go awry when the simulation became all too real. Rebecca Romijn played the character of producer Sunny Lupino in the simulation. Lupino was fashioned after Lucille Ball, who championed the original Star Trek series (Desilu Productions produced TOS). Anson Mount played the writer/creator TK Bellows who was inspired by Gene Roddenberry.
In this exclusive to Parade, Romijn, who plays Una Chin-Riley in the series, talks about her favorite episodes in Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
As the mystery becomes more complex, the holodeck begins to draw more energy from the Enterprise, causing other essential systems to fail. La’An must solve the case before things take a fatal turn. When La’An figures out the Holodeck program created a mystery that was not fashioned for Amelia Moon, but for her to solve, she is able to crack the case and shut down the simulation.
At the end of the episode, La’An and Spock (Ethan Peck) are dancing again, and our Spaceship Casanova goes in for a kiss which La’An joyfully returns. Not sure if fans are into this pairing, but it seems like a rebound relationship for both sides since Spock is licking his wounds after Christine (Jess Bush) hooked up with Korby (Cillian O’Sullivan) and La’An is healing after her unrequited crush on Kirk (Paul Wesley).
The show within the show, “The Last Frontier,” plays a cheeky homage to the original Star Trek series with nods to The Next Generation as well and even uses the original theme song during the episode’s end credits, where a “blooper” reel from the fictitious series rolls. “A Space Adventure Hour” was directed by Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Jonathan Frakes, who can be heard during the outtakes section of “The Last Frontier”.

In “Through the Lens of Time,” this week’s all-new episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Chapel and Korby’s quest to uncover the next step in human evolution leads the Enterprise to a planet where ancient ruins hide a deeper mystery and a terrifying secret.
