Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is set to announce a plan Thursday afternoon to address air traffic control shortages and issues that led to the recent chaos at Newark Liberty International Airport near New York City.
Delays and cancellations upended operations at the Newark airport earlier this week after the Federal Aviation Administration said some air traffic controllers were taking time off to “recover from the stress” caused by multiple system outages.
Duffy, who has vowed to overhaul air traffic control and boost hiring, outlined his proposal to curb issues Monday, days after Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) released a budget reconciliation proposal that would allocate $15 billion for the modernization of air traffic control technology.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
