The latest episode of Masterpiece’s Miss Austen introduces viewers to Henry Hobday. Portrayed by Max Irons, Hobday is a thoughtful gentleman with a keen interest in science and philosophy, and someone closely connected to Cassandra Austen, Jane Austen’s older sister. With his quiet charm and measured sense of duty, he feels drawn from the same mold as one of the famous English author’s own fictional heroes. But was Henry Hobday a real historical figure—or is he a creation designed to imagine what might have been?

The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no.

Max Irons brings Henry Hobday to life.

Max Irons, who portrays Henry Hobday, offered his own description of the character in an interview with the BBC. “Henry is a love interest for Cassy Austen, and when we first meet Henry, he is in his 30s, he is a devotee of science and a bit of a philosopher,” Irons explained. “He has lost his father and has taken to looking after his mother for the last couple of years, a quality that is noted by Cassy Austen. I suppose you could think of him as somewhat of a modern man and a modern thinker, and without wanting to speak out of term I think that is perhaps what made Cassy romantically interested in him.”

The name is real, but the person is not.

Author Gill Hornby, who wrote the 2020 historical novel Miss Austen and lives in Kintbury, found the name Henry Hobday on the village’s war memorial, according to the Daily Express. The inscription honored a local man who had served and died, though the historical Hobday lived long after Jane Austen’s time. The churchyard memorial was first dedicated to soldiers who perished during World War I, but later included names from World War II.

There was another real life Henry Hobday, even born in Sussex (Jane Austen’s final work, Sanditon, was set in a seaside town in West Sussex), but he was born in 1859, according to records on Ancestry.com. Jane Austen died in 1817, and Cassandra died in 1845.

Another theory traces the character’s roots to historical speculation. Per Discover Britain, Jane and Cassandra’s niece Caroline once suggested that the sisters had met a gentleman in Sidmouth, a beach town on the English Channel in Devon, though the niece was uncertain if he had held any special meaning for either of them. When Cassandra later learned of this man’s death, she was said to be deeply distressed, hinting that he may have meant something more to her than any surviving records can confirm.

Hobday bears a striking resemblance to another brooding hero.

Many viewers have pointed out the similarities between Henry Hobday and Mr. Darcy, the celebrated hero of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Hobday’s fictional Derbyshire roots and strong sense of familial duty make the comparison tempting. (Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s massive estate in Pride & Prejudice, was set in Derbyshire.) But scholars caution against reading too much into fictional parallels.

In an interview with the Express, Heather Thomas, the chair of The Jane Austen Society, reflected on the character’s origins, saying, “I think personally, he’s [Jane Austen’s] Prince Charming. He’s an invention largely of her own because she needed to bestow somebody who was really worth having on her light-hearted and mischievous heroine and who was a foil to Lizzie’s impetuousness, wayward behavior.”

While Mr. Darcy’s influence is clear in many adaptations and fictional works inspired by Austen, Hobday’s creation appears more as an imaginative echo than as a historical figure. His character was designed to fit the narrative needs of Miss Austen and to provide Cassandra with a love story that history never recorded.

Even in fiction, accuracy is crucial.

Behind the scenes, the production team worked hard to balance historical authenticity with the needs of storytelling. Executive producer Christine Langan told the BBC that the series is very carefully researched. “Gill moved there 30 years ago, and that’s what initiated her interest and research in Jane’s life—she’s written a non-fiction book about Jane too,” Langan said, “Gill Hornby’s book and the adaptation pursue what might have been in those letters, and in so doing they unravel this very crucial, sustaining relationship between the sisters, without which Jane never would have written her novels.”
