The upcoming game sees Mike Vrabel bring his red-hot New England Patriots to Nashville, facing his former team, the Tennessee Titans, now under interim coach Mike McCoy and reeling from a coaching change, in a contest laden with personal and strategic implications.

The NFL landscape shifts dramatically this Sunday as Mike Vrabel, now head coach of the New England Patriots, makes a highly anticipated return to Tennessee. He’ll face a very different Titans squad, one grappling with change under new interim head coach Mike McCoy. This game isn’t just about extending winning streaks or escaping losing ones; it’s a narrative rich with personal history and strategic implications for both franchises.

Patriots Riding a Wave of Momentum

The New England Patriots (4-2) arrive in Nashville on a three-game winning streak, having secured victories against Carolina, Buffalo, and New Orleans. Notably, their last two wins against the Bills and Saints were both hard-fought road victories. This surge of success, particularly away from home, signals a team finding its rhythm under Vrabel’s leadership in his first season with New England.

Vrabel emphasized the team’s focused approach, stating, “I appreciate us not looking too far ahead. They just attacked Buffalo, and they figured out what we needed to do against the Saints. … Now we’re focusing on Tennessee and the challenge that presents.” This mindset highlights the disciplined culture Vrabel is instilling, one familiar to fans from his previous tenure in Nashville. According to AOL.com, New England aims to continue enhancing what they do well and eliminate mistakes that lead to losses.

Guiding the Patriots’ offense is second-year quarterback Drake Maye, who has demonstrated impressive efficiency this season. He boasts a 73.2% completion rate, having thrown for 1,522 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just two interceptions. His performance has drawn praise from opposing coaches, with Mike McCoy noting, “He’s playing efficient football.”

Titans in Turmoil: A New Era Begins Under McCoy

Sunday’s game marks a new chapter for the Tennessee Titans, as it will be Mike McCoy’s debut as interim head coach. McCoy, previously the team’s senior offensive assistant, was promoted after the firing of Brian Callahan. Callahan’s tenure saw the Titans start the season 1-5, contributing to an overall 4-19 record during his time as head coach.

McCoy, a veteran NFL coach with previous head coaching experience with the San Diego Chargers (2013-16) and six seasons as an offensive coordinator, outlined his philosophy. “I like to win,” McCoy declared. “Do whatever it takes to win. I want these guys to play hard, I want them to play tough and I want them to play together. We have to play complementary football here. … Play four quarters of complementary football. That’s the most important thing.” His immediate challenge will be to ignite a struggling offense that ranks 31st in the NFL in points per game (13.8) and 32nd in yards per game (232.3).

Despite drafting quarterback Cam Ward with the first pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Titans’ offensive struggles have persisted. Ward, who has started all six games, has completed 111 of 202 passes for 1,101 yards (9.9 yards per completion) with three touchdowns and four interceptions. Compounding their offensive woes, top receiver Calvin Ridley sustained a hamstring injury in Week 6, missing the second half of their loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Vrabel’s Legacy and Return to Nissan Stadium

This matchup is deeply personal for Mike Vrabel. He served as the Titans’ head coach from 2018-23, compiling a 54-45 record and leading them to AFC South titles in 2020 and 2021 before being fired after the 2023 season. His return to Nissan Stadium will undoubtedly be met with a mix of emotions from the fanbase and a strong desire to perform from his former players.

Former Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan, who played under Vrabel for five seasons, offered a comical yet insightful warning to Patriots players regarding their new coach. Lewan, co-host of Barstool Sports’ ‘Bussin’ with the Boys’, explained that while he loves Vrabel, players should expect a demanding environment. “Now, if you’re a player, you need to keep your f—ing head on a swivel. Ok? You need to understand that sh– is about to be really hard for a little bit. And it’s going to be ok,” Lewan said. “But just know, you’re about to go into hell for a little bit . . . boys I’m telling you it’s going to work out.” This colorful description underlines the intense, no-nonsense coaching style that defined Vrabel’s time in Tennessee, as highlighted by AtoZ Sports Nashville.

New Leadership, New Staff in New England

Since taking the helm in New England, Vrabel has also been busy assembling his coaching staff, bringing in familiar faces and experienced leaders. He named former Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels as his offensive coordinator. This marks McDaniels’ third stint in the role with the Patriots, and his first since the departure of longtime mentor Bill Belichick. McDaniels, known for his work with Tom Brady, will now be tasked with mentoring Drake Maye.

On the defensive side, Vrabel hired Terrell Williams, who spent six years on Vrabel’s staff in Tennessee, as defensive coordinator. Williams previously served as the Lions’ defensive line coach, where his unit allowed just 98.4 rushing yards per game in 2024, ranking fifth in the NFL. Vrabel has publicly praised Williams’ dedication and coaching acumen, stating, “There is no more deserving person to be a head coach for the senior bowl or any level than Terrell Williams,” as reported by Field Level Media.

The Patriots also retained current special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer, under whom special teamer Brenden Schooler earned first-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl invitation, and Marcus Jones ranked second in the NFL with a 14.8-yard average on punt returns. These appointments signal Vrabel’s commitment to a strong, well-rounded coaching staff.

Injury Report: Key Absences and Limitations

Both teams are navigating significant injury concerns heading into Sunday’s contest:

Tennessee Titans Key Absences:

  • Calvin Ridley (hamstring) – Top receiver, missed practice.
  • Arden Key (quadricep) – Linebacker, missed practice.
  • Tyler Lockett (non-injury/rest) – Wide receiver, missed practice.
  • James Lynch (shoulder) – Defensive end, missed practice.
  • Jeffrey Simmons (non-injury/rest) – Defensive tackle, missed practice.
  • L’Jarius Sneed (quadricep) – Cornerback, missed practice.
  • Kevin Zeitler (non-injury/rest) – Guard, missed practice.

New England Patriots Key Absences and Limitations:

  • Jaylinn Hawkins (hamstring) – Safety, missed practice.
  • Anfernee Jennings (ankle) – Linebacker, missed practice.
  • Harold Landry III (ankle) – Linebacker, missed practice.
  • Christian Barmore (non-injury) – Defensive tackle, limited practice.
  • Stefon Diggs (chest) – Wide receiver, limited practice.
  • Morgan Moses (hip) – Offensive tackle, limited practice.
  • Charles Woods (knee) – Cornerback, limited practice.

The extensive injury list, particularly for the Titans, could further challenge Mike McCoy’s efforts to turn the team’s fortunes around in his head coaching debut. For the Patriots, managing their limited players will be crucial to maintaining their winning momentum on the road.

A Matchup Beyond the Gridiron

Sunday’s game is more than just a regular-season contest; it’s a compelling intersection of past and present. For Mike Vrabel, it’s a chance to demonstrate his new team’s progress on his old turf, perhaps with a touch of vindication. For the Titans, it’s an opportunity to rally under new leadership and halt a downward spiral. With both teams facing challenges and high stakes, fans can expect a passionate and hard-fought battle in Nashville, echoing the intense spirit Vrabel himself often embodies.
