Vince Neil’s 3 Children: All About the Rocker’s Son Neil, Daughter Elle and the Late Skylar

Vince Neil’s legacy extends beyond his music with Mötley Crüe — it also includes his children.

The lead singer became a dad in 1978 with the birth of his son, Neil, whom he shares with ex-girlfriend Tami Jones. Five years later, Vince and his ex-wife Beth Lynn welcomed their daughter Elle. In 1991, Vince and ex-wife Sharise Ruddell had their daughter Skylar.

While Vince was on the road for much of his kids’ youths, it didn’t stop him from developing a strong relationship with them.

“I love listening to her talk. She’s very smart and knows what she wants,” he wrote of Elle in his 2010 memoir, Tattoos & Tequila: To Hell and Back with One of Rock’s Most Notorious Frontmen. “And she seems to love me, even though I wasn’t there during her life. I love her so much, I can’t start to describe it.”

Vince has also spoken of his love for his late daughter Skylar, who died at the age of 4. “I think of Skylar every day,” he told PEOPLE in October 1995. “I know someday the loss won’t hurt as much as it does now. But I loved Skylar very much, and that will never go away.”

Vince was a teenager when Neil was born

The future rockstar was 17 when his son Neil was born on Oct. 3, 1978. Vince welcomed his first child with his high school girlfriend, Tami Jones.

According to the singer, his late mother and father, Shirley and Odie Wharton, helped him with the newfound responsibility of being a dad.

“Obviously I wasn’t ready to be a father,” he told Louder in September 2016. “My parents pretty much raised my son.”

Skylar’s nickname was “Little Vince”

In a 2010 episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories, Vince talked about the likeness he shared with his youngest child.

“She had blonde hair, blue eyes and just a great smile,” the musician recalled. “She looked like me. Everybody called her ‘little Vince.’ ”

The Mötley Crüe frontman opened up about spending time with Skylar amid his divorce from Sharise.

“I would come pick up Skylar every weekend. I loved her hugs when I would come and see her,” he shared. “She would just jump into my arms and [I would] just hold her so tight.”

Skylar died of cancer at age 4

Vince’s youngest child, Skylar, was 4 years old when she was diagnosed with a kidney cancer called Wilms’ tumor. Despite undergoing several operations to try and save her life, Skylar died about four months later on Aug. 15, 1995.

The rocker spoke about his late daughter with PEOPLE in October 1995. “This ordeal is something no parent should have to go through,” he said. “More than that, I wish no child ever had to go through it.”

Vince recounted his emotions in the aftermath of Skylar’s death on a 2010 episode of Celebrity Ghost Stories. “The pain that you feel is just so intense, especially as a father, because … you’re supposed to protect your children,” he explained. “It was devastating.”

The artist later established the Skylar Neil Memorial Foundation, which has raised nearly $1 million to research pediatric cancer, leukemia and AIDS, per Rolling Stone.

“Time heals, but it doesn’t heal all. I have a portrait of her in my bedroom, and I pause and think about her. But that’s the point of keeping her name alive,” Vince told the Las Vegas Sun in February 2011.

He continued, “People think about her and think about what she stands for. It gets sad, but I try to think of the good times that we had together.”

Neil and Elle are musicians like Vince

Vince’s older children followed in his musical footsteps.

Elle joined her ex-husband Will Loomis’ band, Loomis & the Lust, as a bassist in 2012, per Kings River Life Magazine. The group hasn’t released new music for some time, but Elle’s Instagram states that she is a writer, singer and bassist.

Over the years, Vince and Elle have been spotted singing together on social media.

Meanwhile, Neil fronts the Mötley Crüe tribute band, Rock ‘n’ Roll Junkies. He opened up about his band and its music in a June 2005 conversation with Rolling Stone. “We play with the raw energy that Crüe had in their early days,” Neil said.

He also shared that his favorite songs to sing were “Take Me to the Top,” “Primal Scream” and “Public Enemy #1.”

Vince walked Elle down the aisle

When Elle married Will in 2014, her dad was by her side to walk her down the aisle.

Two years later, Vince shared a photo of their sweet moment on Instagram while wishing her a happy birthday. The photo features the rock star and his daughter walking arm-in-arm.

Elle and Will announced their split in August 2023 with a joint message on Facebook.

“Elle and I are writing this together because we wanted to let everyone know that we’re separating but fortunately it’s amicable and we’re still good friends,” it read in part. “Our marriage didn’t fail, it simply ran its course.”

Vince wrote a special song for Skylar

Vince’s 1995 solo record, Carved in Stone, included a special track for his late daughter, “Skylar’s Song.” The then-unreleased song was playing during Skylar’s last moments.

“It took a while for me to get to the hospital,” Vince told PEOPLE. “Sharise sat by Skylar’s side as ‘Skylar’s Song’ played in the background. … Sharise told her, ‘Don’t be scared, sweetie. Go to sleep now. It’s all right.’ Minutes later, Skylar passed away.”

In his 2010 book, Vince referred to the song as “my daughter’s legacy, my [monument] to her memory.”

Neil and Elle are both parents

Both Vince’s son and daughter have welcomed children of their own.

Neil made Vince a grandfather with the birth of his son Trace in October 2011.

Elle welcomed her first child four years later. Vince announced the birth of his second grandchild, Hailee Marie, via X in January 2015.

One month later, the Mötley Crüe rocker shared a sweet photo of Trace holding Hailee.

“Trace and Hailee are ready for football!! Love my grandkids!!!” Vince wrote on Instagram.
