Rupert Everett isn’t mincing words when it comes to his stint on Emily in Paris.

The British actor, 66, made his debut in Season 4 of the hit Netflix series. In an interview with Vanity Fair Italia, he says he was blindsided after not being asked to return.

In the show, Everett played Giorgio Barbieri, a chic Italian interior designer who reconnects with Sylvie Grateau (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) during a storyline set in Rome. The role marked his first appearance in the Emily in Paris universe—and, apparently, his last.

“I was fired,” Everett said plainly. “I did a scene in the latest season, and they told me: ‘Next year we’ll speak.’ I waited for them to call me, but ultimately, it never came, and they just fired me.”

Everett, a two-time Golden Globe nominee, didn’t hide his emotional response to the news.

“For me, it was a tragedy,” he explained. “I was in bed for two weeks because I couldn’t get over it.”

The abruptness, Everett said, felt emblematic of the entertainment business.

“Show business is always very difficult, from the beginning to the end,” he shared. “When they write the screenplay, they think they want you, but then things change, and they lose your character. I don’t know why.”

Netflix has not commented on Everett’s remarks, though Parade reached out to Emily in Paris reps for further clarity and has not heard back.

However, a source close to the production told Vanity Fair that his role was always intended as a guest appearance, and his character arc had simply run its course.

Season 5 of Emily in Paris began filming in May and will include scenes shot in both Rome and Paris. It will premiere later this year.
