Vera Wang Tries Out Carrie Bradshaw’s Most Controversial Midriff-Baring Look — and Brings Back Her Blonde Era

Vera Wang is never afraid to go bold with her fashion choices.

On Monday, June 30, the fashion designer posted a carousel of images to her Instagram, in which she showed off a chic outfit with a major twist.

In the image set, the designer, 76, wore an all-black ensemble that consisted of a black spaghetti strap crop top with bolero sleeves. She paired the skin-baring top with a black skirt that sat low on her hips.

The skirt was attached with silver interlocking chains to a black leather belt that sat in the center of her exposed midriff, creating a negative space effect.

Wang completed the outfit with a black headband and black oversize sunglasses, as well as a small black handbag and black leather ankle boots.

“When shopping at PRADA in PARIS…. Avenue Montaigne …35 meters from my air conditioning…. trying to be a bit fashionyyyy,” she captioned the post.

The designer’s look is reminiscent of a controversial accessory moment from Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) in Sex and the City. In “Change of a Dress” — episode 15 of season 4 — Bradshaw talks with her friends about her engagement to Aidan Shaw.

The sex columnist wore a pink button-down shirt tied at the waist with a green and white printed low-rise skirt. Bradshaw accessorized the look with a green and white belt worn over her bare waist.

The show’s costume designer, Patricia Field, spoke about the outfit in an interview with Bustle in 2023. Field revealed that she was initially hesitant to style the outfit and later ended up disliking her choices for the episode.

“She was wearing a skirt and a crop top, and I threw a belt around her naked waist. Even when I did it I was hesitant, but I think Sarah Jessica liked it, so I went ahead and kept it on,” she told the outlet. “When I saw it later I thought it was just obnoxious. I should have slung the belt a little lower.”

Wang’s fashionable streak continued on July 1 with another black outfit. She wore a black high-neck crop top with side cutouts and paired the top with a layered Rick Owens maxi skirt. She rocked another pair of sky-high black leather ankle boots to complete her look.

But for a change of pace, she topped off her look with long blonde hair.

The designer swapped her dark brown hair for a highlighted blonde wig with a root shadow. She wore the wig parted down the middle and in a sleek flat-ironed style that hung long past her shoulders.

“38 degrees Celsius. COCKTAIL hour AU PLAZA……Diner CHEZ ANDRE in one of my fave RICK OWENS skirt…” Wang captioned the Instagram, which included snippets of her time in Paris.

Wang is in Paris celebrating her birthday. She turned 76 on June 27 and marked the occasion by heading to the city for a birthday dinner with friends and family.

“Just celebrating my 75 9/10 – 76th birthday NEW YORK TIME with my Parisian crew and a few others who have been lifelong besties!” she captioned photos from her birthday dinner. “Thank you all for this special special night!”
