When you’re one of the greatest athletes in the world, why not use a major fashion event to show off your sporty style?
Tonight, Venus Williams returned to the Met Gala red carpet, where the theme for the 2025 exhibition was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” with the dress code being “Tailored for You.”
Although the focus of the evening was on suiting and menswear, Williams knows all about tailoring those courtside uniforms, and her look was a spin on the tennis player’s outfit.
For her appearance, Williams was dressed by Lacoste in a forest green dress with a bedazzled polo-style collar. Keeping the sporty nods coming, the dress also featured a pleated skirt that was short in the front and extended in the back into a maxi skirt for a more elegant red-carpet touch.
Finally, she completed the look with a matching green coat, which was decorated with tassel fringe along the lapels and the hems of the sleeves. For footwear, she slipped into sculptural scalloped heels that were like a fusion between sneakers and loafers. Oh, and for beauty, Williams appeared to nod to her early tennis days by sporting silver beads in her braided hair.
The Met Gala may be considered a very formal event, but Williams understands that there’s always room for tennis-core. Just last year, the athlete spoke to Harper’s Bazaar about the longevity of the aesthetic when she fronted a campaign for Lacoste (fittingly).
“Tennis never goes out of style—it’s always trending!” Williams said. “I’ve always loved seeing people embracing tennis-core and incorporating it into everyday style in their own unique way. Tennis has long been at the intersection of sports and fashion, and Lacoste was one of those pioneers who helped elevate sports-chic looks.”
