Valerie Bertinelli is opening up about the code that she lives her life by — and she’s receiving high praise for her thoughtful words and overall positivity.
As part of her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Bertinelli, 65, took some time to answer some fan questions and a video of her responses were shared on Instagram. The actress, who split from boyfriend Mike Goodnough in November 2024, gave real, honest answers to some big life questions.

One fan asked Bertinelli how she stays confident to which she replied, “I am so not confident. But I’m learning to be more confident. I’m learning to take my own advice. I’m learning to know that I am whole and good and kind just as I am.”
“But I think things that happen in childhood and the shame we hold on to from it don’t belong to us. And they’re not our fault,” she added.

Another fan asked Bertinelli about the best piece of advice she’s ever received. And she recalled a conversation that she had with the late, great Betty White.
“She really taught me about gratitude,” Bertinelli said. “She was grateful for the good, the bad, the ugly. All of it. And I have learned through going through really challenging things over the past five years, I’m grateful for the hard stuff.”
“It sucked. And I wish I didn’t have to go through it. But there was no other way for me to learn a better way,” she admitted. “And I think mistakes are there purposefully to help us learn what not to do.”
“Every moment I’m grateful for — even the hard stuff. Especially the hard stuff,” she added.
Fans loved Bertinelli’s attitude and her responses and let her know in the comments section of the Instagram video.

Bertinelli has been through a lot over the past five years. For starters, she mourned the loss of her ex-husband, Eddie Van Halen in 2020. A few years later, she seemed to find a new love in Goodnough, but their relationship only lasted about 10 months.
Though things didn’t work out for Bertinelli and Goodnough, she has spoken very highly of him and even said that she has been “irreversibly changed by him for the better.
